Persons Who Love Quacks
Of late dozens of people have
written, most of them in a kind
ly vein, urging me to have more
sympathy for
quacks, and
parti cularly
for quacks
who claim
they can cure
cancer. As one
man said, "Be
cause you doc
tors arc not
able to find a
cure for can-
Uz. Alvarez
cer, why throw cold water on
the efforts of those who are hunt
ing for a cure or have found
one?" The only trouble with this
short statement is that it con
tains three obvious mistakes.
Actually, the curing of early can
cer is no problem at all. We
doctors an cure almost any can
cer if the patient will only come
early enough before the thing
has seeded and scattered all over
his body. If it is localized, we
can burn it off, cut it out. or de
stroy it with x-rays or radium.
The second mis-statement is
the inference that we doctors are
not searching for a cure. Actual
ly, just one great cancer research
institute in New York City cov
ers, as I remember the place, a
block or more, and is full of
laboratories in which hundreds
of able men and women search
constantly for a cure for scat
tered cancer. Another great in
stitute is to be found at Bethesda,
near Washington. D.C. Smaller
ones are here and there all over
the country.
So far as I can learn, the sup
posed cancer research of quacks
is only 'on paper. Quacks know
nothing of research, they are in
terested only in selling their so
called remedies for large sums
cash-down-in-advance. In all
the history of medicine and I
know this history well no
quack has ever contributed any
thing of value to medicine, ine
old pirate and quack, Thomas
Dover, gave us Dover's powder
a mixture of opium and ipecac,
but today it is not highly re
garded and is little used. Inci
dentally, people should know
that through the ages quacks by
the hundred have appeared; some
have become famous and have
made a fortune, and then have
disappeared, leaving nothing of
value behind them. In every
case the passage of time soon
showed that their remedy was
useless. It just would not work
in the hands of men who were
not good promoters and adver
tisers. Curiously, it sometimes
quit working even in the hands
of the original quack when he
got wealthy and lost interest in
constantly pushing its sale.
The final statement of my cor
respondent is also wrong. He as
sumes that when quacks say they
have a cure, they have it. If they
had it they would not have to
advertise; all fhey would need
each day would be a large de
tail of police to keep thousands
of people from climbing through
their windows and mobbing
them. Some readers may not be
lieve this, but actually, if to
morrow I were to find the cure
for scattered cancer, I would
dread having to announce it, be
cause in the following year, what
with the crowds applying for the
drug, the thousands telegraph
ing for it, the swarms of reporters
and journalists asking for inter
views about it, and the hundreds
asking me to come and lecture
and receive an honorary degree,
my life would not be w-orth liv
ing. Like my friend, Sir Fred
erick Banting, who discovered
insulin and my friend. Dr. Kin
sey, who wrote on sex. I would
have had to flee and hide some
where. I was amused at dozens of
people who wrote me to say
that, since the able chemists and
drug experts of the Food and
Drug Administration of the Unit
ed States Government, who, aft
er analyzing one of the most
commonly-used cancer "cures,"
found nothing in it but tap-water,
the government experts and the
quack who sells the cure '"could
not both be right," and hence
the government experts must be
wrong, obviously, the only per
son able to say such a thing is
one who hasn't even a rudimen
tary knowledge of chemical
analysis. Such persons might
logically assume that if a crim
inal, being sought by the F.B.I,
were to say that he is a Sunday
School superintendent, Mr. J.
Edgar Hoover must be wrong!
I was also amused at the many
persons who wrote me saying
that I should have listened re
spectfully and have been con
vinced when a certain "doctor"
testified that a particular "can
cer cure" is wonderful. My
friend. Oliver Field, of the Amer
ican Medical Association, who
has a big file of information on
every ignorant quack in the
country, tells me that this sup
posed doctor bought his M.D.
degree from a notorious diploma
mill!
The other day when this "doc
tor" wrote telling me to keep
my mouth shut, he was careful,
on his stationery, not to add M.D.
after his name. He failed, also,
to mention what Mr. Field tells
me. which is that he has been
working on a salary for the man
whose praises he sings!
A few dozen persons wrote me
saying that a certain big "Insti
tute," whose wide advertising
draws in hundreds of patients,
must be a wonderful place be
cause they had seen big editori
als in a newspaper praising the
man in charge. What they did
not know is that the supposed
doctor, having waxed rich, had
bought the newspaper!
It is sad that people who know
nothing about medicine think
they can Hll a crook and an
ignorant quack from an able
physician. Even when they were
terribly gypped, often they do
not know it.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer re
quests for information or to at
tempt to diagnose by mailt,
