"Please, Mr. Jones," he said. ' Don' try to stay." But reporter Russell Jones ot the United' Press did stay in Bu- i dapest. He has stuck there for five v.eek during the unbeliev l able. days when revolution was j winning and the horror-filled ones when it was crushed. Ke has been ordered to get out to night. - Jones' didn't even have a visa when ht drove into the battered capital Oct. 29 in a German Ford which flew the American fleg. Hungarian freedom f i g h t e r s shouted their welcome. Flags flew from every house, stripped of the red star.. He had passed through West cm Hungary, then held by the rebels, and through a ring of j Soviet tanks -that circled Buda j rwst but did not stop him. With ! him was Honya Nyilas, the UP's ! resident correspondent in' "Biids-. pest. She had been vacationing in London and ' recuperating from months in a Hungarian Communist prison. There were no communica tions between Hungary and the outside world- Plane and train service had stopped. Telephone and cable links were down.. ' Roar oi Tanks Somehow, Jones got through bv telephone to Vienna. In a , quiet voice he dictated': ' It is 10 minutes past 2' a.m. i in Budapest. Duna' . the word means Danube you can't tell the . direction of the grinding gears and .the groaning engines. .By daybreak Jones knew the answer. The Russians were back with an overpowering Sundey morning attack. Jones and the other Western newsmen made Iheir way te the United States .legation and took shelter there for the next few days Of furious battle. When it slackened Jones returned to the' Duna. He found his bedroom shattered and the hotel -kitchen- extinct. There was no heat, little food. It was. risking your life to go out in the 'streets. Most reporters decided it was' senseless to stay. In groups they, pulled out for "Vienna more than 100 in all. Jones was the. only American who stayed. At the outset there had been cheers and smiles at the sight qf an 'American-'.. But.. now. that changed'. " . . "They kept asking-' me," said Jones, ''why didn't you come Land help us ... . we thought you were our-.. friends.' Then I felt my complete inadequacy both' as' a. reporter and an American."
