Emeritus Consult t la M41clBe. Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Madteintj, Mavo Foundation ' J: or Alvarez Is It Bttr To Li Or TU th Trulhf -- A' man tells me his father has a certain incurable disease, and his- kind doctor has kept up his hope by telling him that he, is go-, ing to get well., The son is now much distress ed because his father read a column of mine in .which I said there is no known cure for the disease. I am very sorry abgut this, and I know that oft en,, by my frarjkness in this col umn, I must discourage people, but I wish Jhey would keep -in-mind. the other side of the prob-" lem. . Here comes a letter from a poor old farmer who 'says that with much" illness in his family he, used up almost all his sav ings. In the last year what mon ey he had left went to doctors who treated him for the residue of a stroke for which I 'once said there' is little that can be done. The farmer- says "now, "How I wish I could have een your column earlier so that-1 would not have wasted all my money. Now, explain to me why the doctors did not tell me in simple English that they just could not open ud my skull and re-make the part of my bratn that was destroyed by the stroke? To face that-truth might have been a bit of a shock to me, but it would have been kinder to tell me that than to take all my money for absolutely noth ing." My answer is that his doctors might have been glad to tell him that they doubted if they could help him, but they feared, with good reason that if they had re fused to examine or treat him. he would have left their office thinking that they were either ignorant or lazy, or not inter ested in helping him, or even hostile to him. Hard To Admit Many of us doctors find it hard to admit even to ourselves that there are many diseases that we cannot cure, and so we keep on trying. I know that sometimes, when in a medical journal I have said that a cer tain disease was not curable by medicine, I have received a number of chiding letters from my physician friends, telling me that this was no way to talk. i Last week the mother of an epileptic lad took me to task be- j cause I said the disease is com monly inherited. That statement, of course, is nothing new; the fact has been well known since the dawn cf civilization, 6000 years - ago. What angers this mother it that her son says. now that he does not -want ever to have -children. . He-says he will never bring. into this world -a person who misht have to suffer as terribly as he is now suffer ing. His mother thinks it is my duty to lie to all epileptics and to keep telling them that the' risk of their having an epileptic child, is so slight as -to be-not worth worrying about. With Dr. O. P. Kimball's figures here be fore me. showing that in his large group one in .three of the children born to epileptics had seriou 'rouble. I ennot blithely say, 'There is" almost no dan ger.". (To be continued tomorrow)' It's pretty clever the way that the R. J. Reynolds To bacco Company puts out "Salem" cigarettes in Ore gon. In California, try "Sacra mentos" or some "Topekas" in Kansas. Milk Demand Seen In Lunch Program- Portland (U.R) The govern ment's special school lunch pro gram is' scheduled to play an im portant part in the nation's fu ture milk demand. Milton Hult, president of the National Dairy Council, said yesterday. " Hult spoke at the annual Ore gon Dairy Council meeting here. "One factor frequently over looked in evaluating a plan such as the special school lunch milk program is the long time effect of these educational efforts to improve dietary habits of school children as well as adults," he said. Hult also emphasized that training of children to consume dairy products and other high resource-using foods not only will contribute to a more pros perous agriculture but will make for a healthier population. i Jit: PI n I Ho House Too Small, No Job Too Tall for MINKLER WALT'S TV & RADIO SERVICE Oldest Snup to So.
