Turkish Troops Said Dispatched To Iraq London 'U.R) Moscow Radio said today Turkey had sent two battalions of troops to Iraq to bolster the government of Premier Nouri El-Said against '"popular demands" for with drawal -from the Baghdad pact. There was no official confir mation of the reports. Dip lomatic quarters saw the out burst as further proof the ner vous Kremlin feared uprisings in ats satellite empire. Diplomatic dispatches from be hind the Iron Curtain said the "nervous Communist leaders" were strengthening their de fenses in Romania, Bulgaria, Al fa a n i a and Czechoslovakia against Titoist rumblings within and infiltration from without. Fears In Zast Germany There were rumblings- from East Germany as well, and open fears students might touch off a Hungarian-type revolt. There were also East German Com munist warnings to Poland that the reforms there might lead to an open revolution.- Pravda, the official Commun ist party newspaper in Moscow, in an apparent attempt to justi fy the heavy Soviet troop move ments into Hungary, accused the United States and other Western nations of sponsoring "large for mations" of troops to invade Hungary and "drown the coun try in blood." Mindszenty Named It identified Gen. Bcla Kraly, rebellion hero Col. Pal Maleter and Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty as three of the "organizers" of the "bloody counter revolution ary orgy." Mindszenty is now in refuge at the U. S. Legation in Budapest. Pravda said the- cardinal was to become premier of the new Hungary, that Kiraly "mamtain ed direct radio links .with rep resentatives of the ur s. armea forces" and that Maleter plan ned a "military dictatorship." But Soviet help, it said, prevent ed the bloodbath. Diplomatic sources said the truth was quite the opposite and that the Communist "old guard" leaders were leaving nothing to chance in the effort to stem the tide of liberalization in its shaky East European empire. Sales Tax, School Support Approved Eugene U.R) A state sales tax and a raise from $80 to $120 per child in the basic school sup port fund allocation received the approval of the Oregon School Boards association here Satur day. The association wound up a two - day convention without mentioning the proposed "key district" system of distribution school support money. A move to. tag the proposed sales tax as "for educational purposes only," was voted down. All recommendations of the association's legislative commit tee were approved in a package. The sales tax recommendation was voted on separately, how ever. Included in the package ap proval of the legislative commit tee's recommendations were: State grants for capital improve ments to distressed districts, changing the bonding capacity limitation of schol districts to use the current equalization ratio rather than that of 1952; cancel; ing . certification of teachers found guilty of a felony, and re peal of the statute requiring county teachers institutes. Search Resumes for Missing Plane Crew Trenton. Ont. U.PJ Offi cials hoped for a break in the weather today to resume on a ground and air search for three missing members of a U. S. B47 Stratojet bomber that crashed Friday night. Rain, snow and near zero tem peratures Sunday forced a tem porary halt to the search for the three crewmen of the S1.9 mil lion aircraft. Planes had gone out at dawn but wese recalled at 9:30 a.m. because of freezing rain and a low ceiling. The se vere winter weather also ham pered ground searchers. However, a helicoptr did man age to rescue the bomber's com mander, Maj. Robert M. Slane, 33. Trinidad, Colo. He had built a signal fire on an ice-covered lake after parachuting from his plummeting plane. TVf A Tc Ashland Woman Dies of Injuries In Car Accident Five Others Injured On Icy Pavements Icy pavements claimed the life of a 78-year-old Ashland woman and resulted in .injuries to five other Jackson county people in two separate car accidents Sun day, state police reported. Mrs. Mary E. Hale, 78, of 131 Fourth st., Ashland, died at 8:45 p.m. Sunday after the car in which she was riding skidded on some ice. overturned and rolled over a 75-foot embankment on the Dead Indian rd.. about a mile east of Highway' 66. Thrown From Car State police said Mrs. Hale was thrown from the westbound vehicle, which was operated by David Evan's Baxler,.also of Ash land. Baxter and his two other pas sengers. Charles Albert McCal-' mon, 63. of 310 North 'Mountain avc.. Ashland, and McCalmon's 61-year-old 'wife. Lofa. are re ported in "satisfactory" condi tion at Ashland General hospital. Market rd., and was approaching the bridge when he observed Weide's car sliding. He said he stopped "his car and Weide's 'vehicle struck his on the side. Wimans was not injured. "Weide and Miss Mangrum were taken to Medford Osteo pathic hospital by Medford Am bulance service. The accident oc curred at 11:30 a.m. Ex-Medford Man . Holmes' Assistant Salem (U.R) Thomas G. Wright Jr., a veteran of eight years on the news staff of the Oregon Statesman, has been ap pointed administrative assistant in charge of press relations by Gov.-elect Robert D. Holmes. Wright, 36, was the second as sistant appointed by Holmes since the election. Earlier, Har ry R. Swanson Jr.,' Astoria Pub lic relations man. was named administrative assistant to the new governor. A native Oregonian, Wright was born in Sams Valley and schooled in Jackson county and Medford before he entered the University of Oregon to study journalism. He has been active in Marion and Polk county Democratic af fairs. Ezo Pinza Suffers Heart Attack at Home Greenwich, Conn. U.R) Singer Ezio Pinza collapsed at his home at Stamford today and was taken to Greenwich hospital in the fire department ambu lance. Firemen administered oxygen to him during the trip to the hospital. First reports were that Pinza had suffered a heart attack. He collapsed in the dining room of his Wellington Park home. The ambulance was sum moned by members of his fam ily. Pinza had suffered a heart at-, tack in Italy earlier this year. Saturday Night Blaze Damages Annex of Building An annex at the rear of the Neon Advertising Sign company, 134 North Riverside ave., .Med ford. was considerably damaged by fire about 11 p.m. Saturday. One man was hospitalized for Ireatment. according to the Med ford fire 'department. The annex was used as an apartment by Fred John Lentz, 62. He was taken by Medford ambulance service to Rogue Val ley hospital, firemen said. Hos pital attendants said he was not harmed by the blaze". He .was released from the hospital the same evenihg. , Sitting in Chair- According to firemen, two pumpers were dispatched to the building about 10:52 -p.m. when a general alarm .was sounded. Eisenhower To Confer On Defense Budget . " Augusta, Ga. (U.R) The vacation White House announced today that President Eisenhow er will hold a conference with government officials here. Fri day on the massive Defense De partment -budget for the 1958 fiscal year. The announcement said the President will confer with tank ing Defense Department civilian officials and Budget Bureau per sonnel on the defense budget. White House sppkesmon would not speculate on whether mount ing world tensions of recent weeks might force higher de fense spending by. this govern ment next year. The overall defense budget for the present is slightly over S36 billion. Press Secretary James C.
