EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday Norember 30, 1958 Farm Debt Doubled Over 1947 Although Fewer Farmers Noted Washinston OJ.R) Farm debt has doubled since 1947 al though the number of farmers has declined about 20 per cent, the Federal Reserve Bulletin said yesterday. In a study of farm debt at mid-year, the B'-.lletin, a publi cation of the staff of the Federal Reserve Board, said such debt in June was about $18.5 billion, 6 per cent greater than a year go. About S3 billion of this debt was owed to insure commercial banks, S7.7 billion to individ uals and merchants and another $5.7 billion to non-bank financ ing institutions. Although farm debt is about twice what it was in 1947, the year of the last survey, the value of farm assets and the investment in land is uo 75 per cent, the Bulletin said. The rise in debt, the Bulletin said, is-attributable to "smaller farm incomer," forcing farmers to depend -jpon bank credit to "an increasing extent." Other highlights of the report: The average size of outstand ing notes at midyear was 51,400. about 60 per cent higher than in 1947. Of the 3.528.000 loans out standing, 1,697,000 were for cur rent expenses, suh as feeder livestock operations and current operating and living expenses; 1.325,000 were for the purchase of livestock, consumer goods and similar intermediate term investments, and the balance was for repaying of debt, real estate purchases and other simi lar longer term debts. Average Six $2,227 The average size of outstand ing bank loans per borrower was $2,227. Loans not secured by real estate were 75 per cent larger than in 1947, and those secured by real estate were 20 per cent higher. Interest rates on loans secured by real estate averaged about 5.4 per cent a year and 6.4 per cent on those not so secured. This - was about .5 per cent higher on each type than mid 1947 rates. County Association Sets Jackson Meet The Jackson county court will be host to district 4 of the Asso ciation of Oregon counties at an all-day meeting tentatively scheduled Jan. 7, it was reported today. County courts and members i of the legislature will attend. They will discuss forthcoming state legislation. The meeting will be held in the Jackson coun ty courtroom. Among officials expected to be present will be Judge James W. Harrison, Coos county, presi dent of district 4; Judge Ray mond A. Lathrop, Josephine county, president of the associa tion; and F. L. Phipps, The Dalles, executive secretary of the association. District 4 includes Jackson, Jo sephine, Douglas, Coos and Cur ry counties. Every theatrical producer's dream is to come into possession of a play calling for only one set and a cast of three characters and runs for two years on Broad way. It is not such a wild dream as it seems. It has happened. As for example, in the case of the smash hit titled "The Voice Of The Turtle." That had one set, three characters and ran for a couple of years. As I recall it. the original cast was Margaret Sullavan, Elliott Nugent and Audrey Christie. Right? How ever, I am growing tired of one set plays. I like a change of scene. Why isn't there more use made of the revolving stage" That method is currently being cleverly handled in my favorite New York theatre. The Music Box. which is bousing the hit titled "Separate Tables." Still, that show has only two differ ent scenes. I would like to see a good mystery melodrama, a thriller, with at least 20 differ ent scenes. You know, with the program reading scene one A flat in Mayfair. Scene two A street in Soho. Scene three A waterfront dive in Limehouse. And sc on. Plaase Note You have, of course, heard that story of the carburetor that enabled a car to go 100 miles on a gallon of gasoline. Or was it 120 miles? The inventor was reported to be a Canadian named Pogue. Note it now stated in a magazine article that there was nothing to this yarn. That the carburetor referred to was not in any way unusual. Well, all I know about it is that Pogue took out a United States patent on that carbureor. The patent has now run out. So if any Milwau kee checker - upper wanU to check the efficiency of the car buretor being discussed he can have one made from the patent plans and try it out in his car. Get It Right - Who originated the slogan: "See America First"? My belief is that it was Josefa Hale, editor of Godey's Lady's Book. How ever, this is strongly disputed. Some claim it was originated by Charles F. Luinmis about 70 years a so. Others say it was Fisher K. Harris, a clerk in the Hotel Huntsford. Salt Lake City, who originated the slogan about 60 years ago. Horses and Women ' What is your wife's waist measurement? Is it 26 or under? If over 26. she hasn't a chance to win a Mrs. America contest. Nor will she be one of the belles of the beach in Florida this win ter. I have just heard of a wom an who reduced her waistline by one and a half inches in a very short time by becoming a hep cat. That is, she began dancing the rock n' roll and similar dances in enthusiastic fashion. So, if your wife wants to stream line her waist measurement to 26 or under, advise her to be come a hepcat. Of course, you would have to co-operate. How do you think yourself and spouse would look doing the rock n' roll? Asking Queries from clients. Dangerous Hour At what time of the day is it j most dangerous to . be in the 1 midst of city traffic either as an auto driver or a pedestrian? The statisticians say most traffic deaths come between six and seven p.m. But they don't say why. Fatigue after a hard day's work must be a factor. Also, the desire to get home in a hurry. Then the period between six and seven p.m. comes right after the cocktail hour. That certain ly must figure in the aforemen tioned situation. Unusual Pels Ever have any unusual pets? Only kind of pets I have had have been dogs. An upper San dusky, Ohio, reader tells me her family has two pet chickens, one 6', -i years old, the other 714. These chickens sleep in the kitchen. They are fond of ham burgers and apple -cider. They follow members of the house hold around as dogs do. The lady didn't tell me the names of these birds. What would be a good name for a pet chicken? Soviet Shipments To Syria Said To Total $40 Million Washington U.R) Ameri can officials said yesterday Sy ria has received at least $40 million worth of military equip ment from Russia during the past year. Included were tanks, small arms and trucks. Furthermore, officials said, Soviet MIG air planes have been spotted in Syria, but it is not know wheth er they were turned over to Syria by Russia or whether they merely were Egyptian planes that escaped to Syria during the Anglo-French attack on Egypt. Creating New Tensions The State department charged Wednesday that Soviet arms shipments to Syria were creat ing new tensions in the Middle East at a time when the United Nations is working to calm the situation there. Press Officer Lincoln White said the Soviet Union has sent "substantial shipments" of wea pons to Syria, but he did not de scribe them. He said, however, that the shipments continued after fighting broke out in the Middle East. Such action. White said, "is adding to these tensions in the area." The United States is not too worried about the amount of arms Syria has received from Russia so far. But it is greatly concerned that the flow of So viet military goods will continue and increase. 4-H Club News 4-H Junior Council Meeting was called to order by Dale Smith, president. Joan Dobrot gave a report on the pro gram for the leaders' banquet. Dave Woolfolk was appointed master of ceremonies of this pro gram. It was decided that we wait until spring to locate the county road signs. A teen-ager ef each club was appointed to look up talent for the follies. We decided to have a holiday party Friday, Dec. 28. at 7:30 at the courthouse auditorium. Re freshment, decoration, entertain ment, and clean-up committees were appointed. Meeting was adjourned. Then refreshments were served by Central Point, host was Dale Smith. Sheila Coney, Reporter. Red Cross Seeking Beds, Bedding Here Bedds, bedding and household equipment are still needed for distribution to families in this area, officials at the Jackson county Red Cross chapter office have reported. Through a local donation, chapter members were able to supply one county family with a stove. The same family, which includes several small children, still needs bunk beds, officials said. Donations will be picked up and delivered by chapter offi cials if donors call Red Cross headquarters, 2-4405. State Employees Chapter Discusses New Resolutions JoJac chapter of the Oregon State Employees association met Wednesday in the Jackson coun ty courthouse. Chapter president John Spong discussed resolutions passed by the OSEA general council re cently. Among them were sev eral affecting salary and wages, retirement, civil service and working conditions for state workers. A minimum wage scale was adopted in principle. Also passed was an expanded program of public relations to establish better understanding of the status of state workers in the community. Special guest at the meeting of .the combined chap ters of Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland, was Polly Predmore, association publicity director and editor of the OSEA Sen tinel, the monthly newspaper. Salary Increases Salary increases as high as $75 a month for state workers in lower classifications are scheduled under the salary and wages program to be presented to the legislature by the OSEA fact-finding committee headed ICE BOUND HOUND Buchanan, Mich. . (U.R) Harry Trescher's beagle hound came home weighted down after a day of chasing rabbits, but not with game. Moisture collecting on the-metal identification tag dangling from the dog's neck had frozen into a half-pound ball of ice. 'WHEN IT RAINS . . Los Angeles (U.R) A nation ally known salt company is run ning this advertisement on sign boards here: "When it rains, what happens?" by Jay Blair. The survey shows substantial increases are due in all classifications of state service. "Increasing state salaries," Blair said, "can result in savings of millions of dollars to the state dollars now lost through ap palling turnover of personnel." The OSEA salary and wages committee announced that the program is about ready for pres entation to the 1957 legislature. Bull Run Timber Sold on Highest Bid Portland ;U.R) The Linnton Plywood assaciation's bid of S52.25 a thousand for Douglas fir and S10 for other species of timber, has been declared the high bid on some 15 million board feet of old growth timber in the Bull Run water reserve. The timber is located in a 200 acre area to be flooded by the new storage dam. Kenneth Anderson, Water Bu- Freighter Reaches Shelter of Gulf Manila '(U.R) The American freighter Charies Dant has reached the shelter of Lingayen gulf in northern Luzon island after nearly capsizing in the South China sea due to a cargo shift, it has been reported. Radio mesage said the 47-man reau engineer, said that plans are being rushed to have the $5 million dam, upstream from the present Bull Run headworks, fin ished by 1959. crew left the ship and went ashore at the town of Damortis for the night for "safety rea sons" but would reboard today to begin salvage operations. The salvage tug Kabila was reported alongside the ship. The Charles Dant, en route to Tacoma, Wash., sent out a dis tress message reporting her car go of ore had shifted causing a 20 degree list that threatened to roll the ship over.
