Money From Timber Rental, Safe Divided Education Board Eyes Hew Budget Corvallis (U.R) An aggres sive campaign to get the 1957 59 'hock" budget of the State Board of Higher Education through the state Legislature is being planned, according to Chancellor John R. Richards. Dr. Richards told the Corvallis Rota'ry Club ySsterday that the support of all outstanding citi zens in the state would be fought .to give weight to the budget, program. The budget, which he sidwas a shock not only to the Legisla ture but also to other citizens,, calls for a 44 per cent or a $14 million Increase in state funds to the system for the bienniun. Richards pointed to the 10 per cent trimming done to the budget by trie last Legislature and to the rising prices that have hit tile purchasing department, plus the predfeted and unpre dicted growth of the system. Trie last budget was based on an, anticipated enrollment in crease of 16 per cent hut the" actual -.growth was 23 per cent. Richards predicted that the pres ent nrollment of 18.000 stu dents would climb to 32,000 in 10 years. I New Orleans, La. (U.R' A I Floridian who has been bitten I by snakes 65 times says, "I gotta J be careful, a bee sting could kill me." Bill Haast, told New Orleans doctors his fantastic story dur ing one of his many trips from his Miami laboratory with life saving cobra serum. He has been bitten so often by snakes and has immunized himself to such an extent with injections of snake venom, that the delieate balance of natural anti-bodies within his system has been upset. "It's not actually the venom itself, that hurts me," he said. "It's the protein contained in the venom. Allergic lo Protein" "You see, I've immunized my self to suclj a"n extent that I'm allergic to the protein. I used to inject rattlesnake vnom into my system every other day. and cobra venom every three months. "I overdid it, the doctors said. And now I have to be very careful. A bite from a small water mocassin, say that wouldn't even hurt you maybe just cause swelling or discom fort that probably would- kill me. "The doctor told me that a bee sting could- kill me, if I were allergic to the protein in its venom." Haast said he developed his own serum In his laboratory In Miami. He seeks venom to labo ratories to make serum. He said he was so well immunized in 1955 that when a cobra bit him he didn't even treat it. "He gat nfe pretty good, but I didn't even bother with it. I had taken my "booster" shot of ven om about a month before and I knew I was immune." About July of 1956, the slim lithe man, whose burned blond hair belies his 45 years, found out he was "overdone." "A big diamond back rattler got me in the hand." he .ex plained. "As esual. I didn't even bother with it, beeause I thought 1 vas immune. . Everything Got Cray "But about two minutes later everything got gray. Jhen I got terrifically hot. I ran to my laboratory, then went to the hos pital. The doctor said I was lucky to live through it. I was in a bad way for a while. "That's when they told me I had over-immunized myself. That's when they told me the next time would be fatal. "And for a guy who makes his living handling snakes, a diagnosis like that is terrible." But Haast thinks he has a way out of the predicament. He has started immunizing himself again by injecting venom in his arm every other day. He ex pects to be completely immu nized aain is .three ye'ars.
