Recently the Rev. George Tro baugh, assistant pastor of the First Methodist church, said "where a problem exists in a home, and if both parents come for help, either together or sep arately, the more possible a so lution to happier living can be worked out." The subcommittee of the Mental Health committee study ing family problems asked him to illustrate a typical situation. Information shared with a min ister is confidential, he pointed out, but cited as an example, a family in which the children went to Church school each Sun day, but the teachers were puz zled by their behavior. The old est in primary class never en tered into activity unless great ly encouraged and although she had always gone with the same group of children she seemed to have no particular friends. She started to criticize other children to try to build herself up in her teacher's eyes. The kindergarten teacher found another of the children restless and inattentive and un able to concentrate to listen to ; stories other children found in : teresting. He made fun of their j enthusiastic participation. In all the children there was a vague feeling of unhappiness. Ministerial Call A friendly ministerial call was made to get to know the family better and to explain vacation Bible school about which the parents seemed agreeable be cause "children need religious traihing." The parents were aloof throughout the call. Later the children stopped go ing to church school. One of the teachers found that the mother had taken the three children to live at her parents. No one knew the undercurrent of unsaid feel ings in the home, and the par ents thought they could work everything out by themselves. Instead they took their frustra tions out on the children through their expectations of model be havior. Since living with the grand parents was not successful, the family tried reconciliation, and the mother went to her minister for help. He found that she was not satisfied with the husband's job and earnings, thought he could do better for the family and that she should go to work which he stubbornly opposed. Instead of discussing their feel ings they stored up resentments. After several visits to her minis ter, she began to understand what was behind her ambitions and to live within their income. The father had ridiculed help for himself, but appreciated the change in the attitude of his wife and began to share more in fam ily life. The children's behavior changed in church school, re flecting the security gained from the happier climate at home. Answers to various questions concerning family problems are being solicited through a survey of professional groups who see families with personal troubles by the Mental Health committee of Jackson county. The commit tee meets Thursday noon in the conference room of the court house annex. j Huge Waves Damage jOahu Beach Homes j Honolulu U.R) Residents of ; the northwest coast of Oahu Is j land were warned today to "be ; on your guard'" for a possible 1 recurrence of huge waves that j destroyed one beach home, dam i aged several others and injured j three persons.
