"I'm down to about 75 ban quets a year right now," said Donald today, ' but not so long ago I was doing about 200 a year zard, an oily bird that catches j troubie with that is, you shoot the unwary. The sandy-haired emce of ABC TV's "Masquerade Party" has officiated for more than 15 years in the ceremonial dinner league, a nation-wide circuit your fees in the doctor s oltice. "Boy, I'll tell you one thing about this banquet business you either get em in the first 30 seconds or they break you. Fortunately, I've developed that features such hazards as 1 kind of sixth sense by now of sizing up the situation.' I Drunken Audience i It wasn't always that way j though. Gruesome Experiences "We all have different tech niques, but esentially it all boils down to one thing laughter. "One was at an auto dealers convention where they unveiled their car for the year. under that pall I made my en trance. "The other was just . a- few weeks ago when the toastmaster mumbled my name and said 'And now. he'll tell you funny stories." What can you do in a situation like that?" But the worst hurdle is the chicken. "I rarely touch it," said Donald, " that chicken tetrachlo ride can get you after a while. Trouble is, if you don't eat it, they seem to fly it in to the next town just ahead of you and there it waits, older and a little colder." The newest report on one of the most careful of statistical studies of' the rela tionship, if any, between cig aftette smoking and lung cancer, shows that the non-smokers who died of lung cancer, did so ihuch later in life than the smokers who died of it. The British Medical Journal singled this out for comment from the four-year report of the Doll-Hill study. The report has high prestige in, the science 3 world because Dr. Richard Doll and Prof. A. Bradford Hill are members of the British Medical Council and have international repute in the field of medical statistics. The journal also found that the report gave 'a convincing answer to a question of great im portance for all smokers: Does giving up smoking diminish the risk of developing lung cancer?" It emphasized the finding that the lung cancer mortality rate of the subject who had given up . smoking cigarettes for more than 19 years was about one-third the mortality rate of those who hadn't stopped. " . The subjects of the DoU-Hill study number more than 40,000 and are, or were, medical doctors practicing in the British. Jsles. They set down their smoking habits in the autumn of 1951. There was one report in 1954 but it was rather too soon afterward - lo mean very much. The newest report shows what has happened to them after four years and five months. . ' in that-time there were 1.714 deaths among them, 84 from lung cancer. The mortality rate from lung cancer among the non smokers was 0.07 per 1,000, among light smokers, 0.47; among moderate smokers (15 to 24 cigarettes a day) 0.86; among heavy smokers (24 or more cig arettes a day) 1.66. But the heavy smokers had a higher mor tality rate from whatever cause than non-smokers, 18.84 per thousand as opposed to 13.25 per thousand. Commenting on the report, which it published, the journal said "pipe smoking appears to have been about one third as dangerous as cigarette smoking." It pointed out that "the smoking habits of doctors resident in rural and urban districts were remarkably simitar, so that the results cannot have been affected by varying exposures to atmos pheric pollution."
