SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, November 26. 1956 Mindszenty Described as Tool Of Reactionaries in Hungary Marine Officers Slate Visit at SOC Campus Budapest (U.R; The official Hungarian government newspa per Sunday charged Josef Car dinal Mindszenty with being a tool of the reactionary elements in Hungary. It said Mindszenty"i own words condemned him as a "spokesman for the counter revolution, with political aims hidden under his cassock." The article was distributed in London by the official Soviet Tass news agency. "Mindszenty was made cau tious as were other politicians of the bourgeois restoration by the presence of the Soviet army on the outskirts of Budapest and by the news arriving of more Soviet troops entering Hungary," the newspaper said. Reason for Abstaining "That was the reason he ab stained from entering into such details as . . . the cancellation of land reform and the return of industries to their former owners." NEP Szabadsag said the "Hor thyite leaders of the counter revolutionary forces wanted to thrust Mindszenty into prom inence because he was Tegarded as a man above parties." The cardinal's release from house arrest in Felsopeteny was organized and directed by a Maj. Antal Palinkas, "who is no other than the son of one -ot the prominent figures of the counter-revolution of 1919," it said. It referred to the overthrow of the Red dictatorship of Bela Kun. Lawful Calling The newspaper said Mindszen ty "did not omit to threaten all those who it might concern." I never knew until recently that Paul had a brother named Cal Bunyan,.ho built the big gest railroad in the world. This flight of fancy is contained in an article Budd I. McKillips, pen ned for "Tracks," a publication of the Chesapeake 4 Ohio and Nickel Pere Marquetta Railroad. The line was called the IJA& SI; Square name Ireland, Jeru salem, Australia and Southern Indiana Railroad. Only reason it didn't put the locals out of busi ness was that it was a non-stop road. Anil-Bragging According to a fictitious char acter named "Springwheels" Conley, Cal Bunyan got worked up over the bragging the Great Northern did over its new line. Better railroads C. B. would build. He finally did, but it took a bit of time. This was to be a big, big, rail road. Common ballast was out, so Cal fetched in boulders from the Rockies. Each boulder weigh ed six tons. Each nail was knocked home by a couple of giants, next of kin fo the Bun yans, and they hit down with fence post, mauls. At length the train was ready. But there was a small disturb ance when the engine started the air pump for the first run. The first attempt, according to the best information available, "sucked all the air out of four neighboring states." The best au thorities are vague about which states were done in. - The IJA&SU finally got under way and hasn't been heard from since. Maybe that's fine. A train that could, become something of a menace. Gas Explosions Take Three Lives By UNITED PRESS Gas expfbsions jarred two communities in Colorado and New Mexico Sunday. Three per sons were killed and six others were hospitalized with injuries. One blast rocked a city block in Springer, a northern New Mexico town of 1.000, killing two persons. Five others were hospitalized with injuries and four were less seriously hurt. An explosion in a suburban area just southeast of Denver kiiled a natural gas pipeline worker and injured his co-worker seriously. It occurred when a valve blew off a 20-inch gas line under repair." . Police Chief Virgil Carter said state officials would investigate the Springer explosion, but he was sure it was caused from frakage in an underground bu tane tank. The explosion erupted into Joe Stewart's "corner" drug stoi and the Stockman's cafe, and also leveled two nearby un occupied business buildings. Officials doubt that Syria would be successful in such a venture. But -they said Russia, which wants to continue stir ring up trouble in .the Middle East, might goad Syria into starting an incident along its bor der with Israel that could spread into a larger conflict. The United States has evi dence that Syria has been receiv ing large amounts of Communist arms for "a considerable period of time." French sources have estimated that Syria gets about two ship loads of Communist arms a week, but American bfficials be lieve this estimate high. U.S. officials are watching for any signs that Syria might go too far and provoke Israel into a new "preventive action" on the pattern followed, against Egypt at the end of October. Gamblers Scurry From Las Vegas Fire Las Vegas OJ.R; Las Vegas' great white way was illuminated Sunday night by a fire in the Boulder Club which sent hun dreds of patrons scurrying to the street. Damage was estimat ed at $200,000. The fire started in the upper floor of the two-story frame structure built in 1909 and 'burst through the roof in a spectacu lar flash of flames and smoke. Ihousands of persons gather ed on gaily lighted Fremont st. in downtown Las Vegas as fire fighting units and reserves fought the blaze and kept it from spreading to other build ings in the area. One man was trapped briefly by the flames before making his escape and a fireman suffer ed minor injuries when knocked down by a backdraft from the fire.
