Kick-off time today between the powerhouse of the Rogue and the kings of the Oregon metropolis is 8:15 p.m. And high pitched clubs are expected to vie before capacity audience. Advantages Winner goes on next week end to meet the victor in the Marsh-field-Pendleton semi-final skirm ish. The Buckaroo-Bucanneer semi is set for Saturday after noon at Pendleton. Both Medford and Benson have their psychological advan tages. The Black Tornado has the benefit of playing on its home field for the eighth time this fall and will be cheered by a huge hometown gallery. The Engineers of Portland carry with them the role of the underdog seeking upset. They'll have in mind, too, the 7 to 6 stunner Grant of Portland pulled on a highly-favored Tornado team in 1945. Not since then, until this year, has a Medford club reached the Oregon semi-finals. Medford, No. 2 ranked in the prep polls, and Benson, rated No. 4, also will clash in a battle for prestige with the Tornado nut to unhold the honor of the south and the Techmen fighting to atone for season starter re versals of the PIL. Medford, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls of the Southern Oregon circuit all trimmed Portland clubs in opening games of 1956. Improving Club Coach Ralph Harper brings to Medford an improving Benson club which has a string of eight victories going after an initial non-loop loss to Marshfield, which was later tied by unbeaten Medford. The Engineers will toss a T formation offensive at the Black Tornado which like Med ford features a strong ground game. Benson backs have the size and speed to make the running game click. They ran up 1880 rushing yards in seven PIL con flicts. BOb (The Bullet) Butler, has been the leading gainer with 795 yards and 7.6 per carry. Jim Warren collected 484 PIL yards at 6.4 a tote and Bill Newborne has rushed at a 3.7 average in getting a 326 total. Quarterback Bob Christiansen of the Techs also can be counted up for yardage and, while run ning is the Benson forte, he is expected to provide some of the most dangerous passing Medford has met this year. Afternoon Dinner Medford is also a ground pow er club but with the effective and timely use of passes. It has a host of fine backs with break away boys Gary Riley, Eldon Francis and Gordon Owsley and crashers Dick McLaughlin, Bob Gee and Loren Christean the top performers. It will be the 59th renewal of the rivalry between the two schools. The game will not be tele vised unless an "angel" appears to sponsor a telecast at the last minute Stanford is favored, mainly because of the presence of pass ing great John Brodie on the squad. In other traditionals, UCLA meets Southern California in Los Angeles, while Washington plays Washington State at Spo kane.
