The secret is Cut tbey are three cats grown sleek and contented on the plentiful diet of field mice in the White House shrubbery. Naturally, no one will take credit for their nicknames, but the cats one tawny, one gray and one black and white began padding through the fence and gates of the White House several weeks ago. The cats, however, have paid only passing notice to the squir rels . and concentrated on the shrubbery where field mice nes tle in the heart of busy down town Washington. The three mouse hunters oper ate quite independently of each other, but at all hours of -the day and night. Their origin and home base remain a mystery, but they have been seen crossing into the White House grounds from the old State Department Build ing where the rodent supply must be falling off of late. Even though the White House was rebuilt at a cost of millions of dollars during the Truman administration and is presum ably mouse-proof, it isn't.
