(U.P.) How long does it take to write a book? This question, impossible to answer really, was kicked around at the Ohio Valley Writ ers' Conference at Marietta Col lege here, and the authors were in complete disagreement, as might have been expected. The range was from 28 days to five years. The catch, they agreed, is that years may inter vene from the first mental toil on an idea until the writer sits down to actually write his book. The authors agreed that the essential ingredient is an un known quantity called "readi ness for writing." "This means more than just deciding that you want to make a lot of money publishing your work," one author observed. "It involves wanting to write more than anything else in the world." Number of Factors There are a number of factors involved in the time it takes to write a book, the staff members agreed. These included working habits, type of book, size of book, and other factors. The 28-day book was written by an author who worked prac tically around the clock on a solid plan. The housewife or newspaper man with a craving to write a book might take years. But, the authors agreed, it is not always the amount of time involved that means the differ ence between success or failure. The successful book, they said, is one that grows out of not min utes or years but out of lifetimes. Taking part in the conference were Dorothy James Roberts, author of "The Enchanted Cup;" Anne Chamberlain, author of "The Tall Dark Man;" Richard Sullivan, author of "311 Con gress Court;" Josephine Phillips, successful juvenile author; Henry Volkening of a New York agen cy, and Herman Ziegner of Bobbs-Merrill publishing firm. Wisconsin Ahead of Britain in Aircraft Madison, Wis. (U.R) The Wis consin Aeronautics Commission disclosed that there are more than twice as many civil aircraft registered in the state as in all of Great Britain. 1 The commission said it expects 1 some 100 planes to be registered in addition to the 1.408 already listed. The total in Breat Britain is 655. Recent national figures indi cate there are about 99,000 civil aircraft registered in the United States. Calif., who says, that many of the patients have done beauti fully when injected with white blood blood cells containing a protein called DI. Many persons with the disease will now be watching to see if this discovery is confirmed by other experts. Recently, a young woman, Miss Ann M. Michelson, of Brooklyn, working in the Jack son Memorial Laboratory at Bar Harbor, Me., started studying a mouse which interested her be cause it walked in such a pecul iar way. On putting sections of its muscles under the micro scope, she learned that the mus cle fibers were defective, just like those of persons with muscu lar dystrophy. Perhaps now a race of mice with muscular dys trophy can be developed, and then there will be many oppor tunities for learing what the defect is, how it is inherited, and how it can be corrected. Epilepsy and th Law I have just been reading a re markable little book by Roscoe L. Barrow and Howard D. Fab- ing. The authors have gathered together a remarkable amount of material which will enable the epileptic to see what his legal status is in all the several states of the Union. It will be interest ing to an epileptic to learn whether in his state he is al lowed to marry or to drive a car. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for information or to at tempt to diagnose by mail.
