(U.R) Fiery Bobby Bragan, with a vote of confidence in the form of a new 1957 contract to pilot the Pittsburgh Pirates again, cited more than a half dozen reasons today why the Pirates ought to do better than seventh place next season. The 38-year-old Bragan. who succeeded Fred Haney to the post a little more than a year ago. after piloting Hollywood in the Pacific Coast league, radiat ed the same confidence express ed by Pirates General Manager Joe L. Double Main On GP Card Friday Night All of the Grants Pass wres tling fans have expressed en thusiasm with the change of the matches from Wednesday to Fri day nights. The first big card at the new time will unfold this Friday at the Josephine County Fair grounds arena when matchmak er Elton Owen presents a big "ladies free"' card featuring a double main event. Both matches could main event on any card in the northwest. Roy Heffernan, the great Aus tralian champion, will return to tackle big Don Kindred in the top mainer. Kindred is heavier and rougher than when he ap peared here last and the big head-butter will have his hands full with the smooth-wrestling Aussie. Waiting for the ball is Jimmy Bullet Testing Rocket Trip to Salt Lake City (U.R) The day of the first rocket trip to the moon may be brought a step closer by some Utah scientists who are seeing how fast they can fire a bullet. What does the speed of a bul let have to do with rockets? Dr. William S. Partridge, as sociate professor of electrical engineering who is ift charge of the research project at the Uni versity of Utah, explained that at high speeds a bullet is much like a meteor. That is. some of it burns off or disintegrates. Partridge and his fellow sci entists hope to find a metal or alloy that will withstand such burning, caused by friction of the fast flying projectile against ihe air. At 10,300 Feet Now Once such a metal is found it can be used in building intercon tinental or even interplanetary missiles. For if a rocket is ever to reach the moon it must be able to withstand meteor-fast speeds in order to escape the pull of earth's gravity. The speed at which a projec tile must be hurled to leave the field of gravity is called "escape velocity." That's about 35,000 feet per second. So far the highest speed at which the Utah scientists have been able to shoot bullets made of various metals aluminum, magnesium, tin. titanium, cop per, lead and zinc is 10,300 feet per second, four times the Basketball NATIONAL LEAGUE By United Press The Boston Celtics opened up a two-game lead in the Eastern division of the National Basket ball association today thanks to the brilliancy of backcourt stars Bill Sharman and Bob Cousy. The twin sharpshooters con nected for 50 points, 28 by Shar man "and 22 by Cousy Wednes day night to lead the Celtics to a 95-83 victory over the Phila delphia Warriors. The loss drop ped the Warriors below the .500 mark, only 11 points ahead of the New York Knickerbockers, who bowed to the Fort Wayne Pistons, 104-103, in overtime. The Rochester Royals snap ped a three-game losing streak with an 87-76 victory over the St. Louis Hawks in the other game Wednesday night. This was done by using heavy charges of fast-burning powder. But Partridge has hopes f shooting a bullet up to .30.000 feet per second, and possibly even faster. He believes this may be done by using compressed helium in a specially constructed . "Buck Rogers" type of gun or by using a spark to explode hydrogen inside the weapon. An Accelerator Gun The "gun" that Partridge places his greatest hopes in, how ever, is what technicians call an electro-magnetic accelerator, "a device the Japanese and Ger mans experimented with in har bor guns during World War II. In the accelerator, electrical charges ranging up to 28,000 volts from a photo-flash condens er force the projectile through a cylindrical coil that forms the "barrel" of the gun. When sev eral such coils are connected in a series, each succeeding cofl should give the projectile an added burst of speed, Partridge believes.
