Farmer Thomas Russell lives on the wrong side of the tracks. His barn cauaht fire and he sum moned the fire department but wasons were halted when a train blpcked their path. Plastics and Cancer Since I remarked that re search workers reported that a number of plastics they had in- isjajj i aksw.jai troduced into the tissues of small animals produced can cer, a number of people in cluding den tists have asked me about den tures, com monly made of a plastic. I have never heard of cancer being produced by them, and I would not expect any to be so produced because the plastic is so hard, and it is in contact with the outer surface of the body. I was talking about soft, sometimes spongy plastics which were placed deep within the tis sues of the body. Some people now are worry ing for fear the plastic frames of their eyeglasses will cause trouble. I certainly would not fear that. I am sorry that in my columns I sometimes worry people. Every day I try not to, but often times it does not occur to me what people will read into some apparently harmless thing I have said. I cannot think of all the possible things that people will pick to worry about. Thousands of good men and women will so often fail to notice some qual ifying words. To show what I mean: when I said that there is a drug that will help some per sons who have a very irritable nervous system and who have epilepsy in the family, and an epileptic type of electroenceph alogram, hundreds of persons who perhaps are somewhat ner vous, but who have no epilepsy in the family and have never had an electroencephalogram made wrote begging me for the med icine. I doubt if it would be worth their while to try it. Operations For Harmless Troubles A physician just wrote to say that an x-ray man had discovered in him a duodenal ulcer; an ulcer just outside the stomach in the first inch of the bowel. He wants to know what type of operation I think he should have for the ulcer. I said, "Wait a minute; is the ulcer bothering you in any way, or is it what we doctors call silent never producing any symptoms?" As I said, if I ever have an ulcer, no one is going to operate on me, unless the thing produces so much pain that I have to walk the floor every night. If it gives me oc casionally a little pain which is easily relieved by the taking of a glass of milk, I will never bother to be operated on. As the Chinese say, " Why call in a tiger to chase away a dog?" As I answered this doctor, I thought of the many letters my secretaries find in the mail every day letters from women who say that on going for a routine check-up the doctor found a knob of muscle, a so-called fib roid or myoma, on the side of their womb. They want to know if they must rush to a hospital to part with their womb or all of their pelvic organs. Many of these women are in their thirties and still hope to have a baby. I am happy and proud to say now that more and more of these women are telling me that the good doctor who found the knob on their womb said, "That isn't doing any harm; it isn't bother ing you in any way, and the danger of its turning into cancer is only 1 in 1000 or so so small that it is not worth worrying about." So the doctor refused to operate. What is unfortunate is that sometimes then the woman, still worried, goes to 3 or 4 more surgeons. One of these women who writes today says that out of the 3 surgeons she just saw, one refused to operate, saying that at her age hysterectomy might be a tragedy. She might lose her sex-feeling and there by lose her husband's love. One surgeon wanted to rush her to a hospital to operate as an emer gency, and the other said there was no hurry, but he thought the knobby uterus was better out. Almost Hopelessly Depressed I am sure my correspondent would not accept an operation if she were to talk to the woman of 40 I just saw who, a year or so ago, had a hysterectomy because of a knobby uterus not pro ducing any symptoms. Now she is almost hopelessly depressed and in the hands of a psychi atrist. On writing to some of the ablest gynecologists in the coun try about this problem, I find them answering to say that they would leave a silent "fibroid" alone. They see no reason for , taking the knob of muscle away. They remind me that one white woman in three and one colored woman in 2 has such knobs of muscle on her womb. They are much like knobs on a potato, which are made of potato, and hence can hardly be called dis eased. The able gynecologists tell me that in their younger days they followed the old cus tom and took out many wombs for these so-called tumors; but now in their later years, they are refusing to do this; they have seen too many results that were bad psychologically, and they no longer worry about the possibility of the knob of muscle becoming cancerous. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate. 1956.) OUT FOR DEER Muskegon, Mich. U.R) Con servation officers in northern Newaygo County nabbed two imaginative Muskegon men with a doe in the trunk of their car, 36 cans of venison and some fresh deer meat in their homes and a 30-30 rifle remodeled into a "poachers special." The out-of-season hunters had equipped the rifle wit ha flashlight mounted on the barrel and a brass ring over the rear sight to protect the shooter's eyes from the flashlight's glare. Of 44 wildcat wells, four find some oil but only one finds a field of a million barrels or more enough to last the nation for roughly four hours. 8 You don't dare named your cbild "Elvis" without paying a $100 royalty fee to the Elvis Presley Enterprises.
