Mill Creek Project Assured of Study Portland (U.Ri Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) an nounced here today that the Bureau of Reclamation will in corporate a study of the Mill Creek reclamation project in its program of development. He said that the receipt of a fa vorable report from a commit tee of farmers interested in sup plemental waler supply for the Sheridan area brought about the decision. Neuberger said he had been advised by H. T. Nelson, region al director of reclamation, that two possible storage sites would be considered for the project. The possible storage areas are at Gorge Dam site, immediately above Mill Creek gorge, and South Branch dam site, below the confluence of South Branch with Mill creek. A Ncfio's Worth of . . . They'll be too wrapped up in observ ing. The Cham ber of Com- Hirm .mi ii merce of the United States has jusf come for ward with its annual pamphlet: "Special Days, Weeks and Months 1957." To be sure, many of the things to be observed are on the serious side. National holidays like New Years, Thanksgiving, Labor Day: religious holidays of the several faiths and the like. But you can count me out on "Save The Horse Week" Oct. 13-19 and "Old Maid's Day" June 4. Not that I have anything special against saving horses, or old maids,, either. I know a lot of fine horses. NICHOLS Feature Writer ried ladies who probably would qualify, age-wise, as spinsters. It's just that time and lack of energy gets in the way when these celebrations are going on. I might take a few minutes off during the week of Jan. 19 26 to do a little work to help celebrate "National Crochet Week," since work with the needle and yarn has done me up bright in some pretty fine quilt work. And naturally, I can sacrifice I part of one lunch hour to honor our sweater girls on "National Sweater Week," Sept. 16-22. The sponsors of the week tantalized me by saying, in part, that the celebration is devoted to "bring ing to the public the advantage of sweaters and related knit wear." Most of us. I hope, will run along with "National Rug Clean ing Month" the month of April, "National Laugh" time the same month, and "National Ladder Month," if the lady of the house is strong enough to climb one. "National Fur Care Week," "Ice Cream'n Cherries Month," "Better Bedding Time," "Na tional Tavern Month" and "Na tional Do-It-Yourself Week," April 16-23. That "do-it" thing is one I miss on purpose, along with "Don't - Take - Any - Stuff -From - The - Boss - Week." The do it yourself week al ways stirs up something in the little woman. She can think of such nonsense as beating rugs, cleaning the blinds and running through the closets to throw away treasures I have been sav ing for years. So I have a system. The "do it" week and the time set aside for "don't take any stuff from the boss" are parlayed with "Na tional Domestic Rabbit Week." When these three events come together, I run away on vaca tion. The decision apparently would apply in principle to other states but did not rule out segregated seating by the carriers them selves. Alabama State Sen. Sam En gelhardt, executive secretary of the White Citizens Councils of Alabama, said "the people of Alabama are not going to put up with integration." Immediately after the Su preme court decision was hand ed down President C. C. (Jack) Owen of the Alabama Public Service commission announced a plan under which intrastate car riers would continue to segre gate Negroes in order to pre serve public peace. In Florida, State Attorney General Richard Ervin said the decision will have no bearing on his state "unles direct suit is brought against our laws and city ordinances." Negroes of Montgomery, Ala., and Tallahassee, Fla.,. are boy cotting city bus lines until they win the right to sit anywhere. In Miami, two Negroes arrested for sitting in white sections have sued for the right to sit where they wish. In Montgomery Negroes planned to ask the U.S. District court today for an order that would restore car pools, the backbone of their 11-month-old boycott. The Montgomery Improvement association, organized shortly after the boycott began last Dec. 5 was enjoined Tuesday against operating the car pools. However, a mass meeting was called tonight to end the boycott because of the Supreme court decision. The Rev. Martin Luther King, president of the MIA and leader of the boycott movement, told United Press he will recommend the boycott be lifted. Don't Shoo Woodpecker Away From Your Tree Kent, O. (U.R) If you see a woodpecker nipping at your tree, don't shoo him away. Odds are he's doing your tree and you a great favor by removong bor ers that otherwise couldn't be dislodged. Borers, which spend most of their life cycle gnawing away inside trees, cause many arbo real deaths, according to Martin L. Davey Jr., the tree expert. The "big three" in borer de struction are the hairy wood pecker, downy woodpecker and red-headed woodpecker.
