Newbry Authorizes Vote Recount on Protest Salem (U.R) Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry today au thorized a recount of votes fol lowing a protest from Albert Minser, defeated candidate for . Curry county assessor. The recount will cost Minser ! $130. Newbrjy said Minser was the ! first candidate to demand a re count under a law passed by the 1955 Legislature. Portland Police Find Robbery Alarm False Portland !U.R) Police sped to the Bank of California late yesterday when a holdup alarm was activated but found business going on as usual at the bank. Officers said apparently a late-working teller had accident ally triggered the alarm. 5 3S95 Straight Four-Lane Road Linking Salem And Euqene in Plans Salem U.R; A long-awaited four-lane highway running in a straight line between Salem and Eugene was announced today as part of a planned program for Highway 99 construction under funds available by the federal aid to highways bill. The program, announced by V. C. Williams, state highway engineer, includes numerous major improvements throughout the main north-south arterial. Improvements listed are to be completed within six years. Other 99 Improvements Williams said a total of about S71,534,000 would be spent on improvements on Highway 99, including S20.897.000 of federal funds to be used in the Eugene Salem stretch. Plans call for construction of a new four-lane route from north of Albany to Judkins point at Eugene. The Baldock freeway already links Salem to Portland with a four-lane high way and an additional four-lane stretch south of Salem is jn operation. Williams said that the Salem by-pass would be widened to a four-lane route. Other major projects slated for the 99 route include: Grants Pass Work Planned Four-lane route from Judkins point to Lane county line, 11 miles. S8.055.000: freeway con version from Judkins point to Cold Air Mass rings Snowfall In Northwest Area By UNITED PRESS Light snow accompanied a cold air mass that moved through the northwest portion of the country early today and heavy snow was forecast for portions of Nebraska. Cold air moved into the Northwest and made consider able headway east and south westward. It covered the region from the Upper Mississippi Val ley westward through the Northern and Central Plains to the Pacific Coast from Wash ington to Central California. Due in Great Lakes Area Weathermen expected the nippy air to penetrate the North ern Great Lakes area today and also swing southwestward through Kansas, Arizona, and Southern California. Scattered snows have fallen from the Western Dakotas to Eastern Oregon. Most amounts, however, have been light. The snow was expected to whiten the countryside from the Rocky Mountains eastward to the Northern Lakes today. Showers were forecast along the leading edge of the cold air which dropped temperatures to the 30s and to the teens in mountain regions. Cold on East Coast The East Coast was still under the influence of another cold air mass moving eastward over the Atlantic. A few snow flurries occurred in the chilly air from Northern New York through New Hampshire. Between the two cold air masses, southerly winds brought a warming from Southern Cal ifornia eastward through the Southern Plains and Mississippi 1 and northeastward through the Great Lakes. Incurable' Cancer Said Not Hopeless Washington W.P. Two ra diologists advised fellow doc tors today to stop writing off as '"hopeless" so-called "incur able" cancer cases. The two specialists said too often these "incurable'' cases get a "minimum of thoughtful attention and a bounteous sup ply of opiates." The radiologists, Drs. George Cooper Jr. and James A. Cran ford Jr., both of the University of Virginia school of medicine, ! said that no disease becomes hopeless until every known i method of treatment "has .been carefully, fully exploited" with out effect. In cancer cases that includes consideration of radi ology, which is treatment with radioactive substance and x rays. they said. Some patients for whom there was only faint hope have been cured of cancer because the physician did not despair, they said in a paper presented to the Southern Medical Association in convention here. For others, life was prolonged and the pa tient was able to lead a happy normal existence. Application to the Federal Communications C o m m 1 ssion seeking transfer of ownership from founder -owner Loring Schmidt to Salem Broadcasting Company was made here yester day. ' The new company would in clude Schmidt, C. O. Fisher of Eugene and Mrs. Nancy Harri son. Roseburg. The Fishers now operate radio stations at Pendleton and Hood River and radio-television inter ests at Eugene and Roseburg. C. C. The Oregon Supreme Court today received an order from the United States Supreme Court denying a petition for a writ o certior ari from Otto W. Cahill. Cahill, an official of a Lin coln county water district, was found guilty of converting $750 in public funds and was sen tenced to one year in the state penitentiary. His conviction Was upheld by the State Supreme Court, but, execution of sentence was post poned pending outcome of. his appeal to the U.S. Supreme' Court.
