The announcement was made by Vice Adm. Robert L. Denni- son, commander of the First Fleet, and Vice Adm. Alfred M. Pride, commander of Air Forces of the Pacific Fleet. Wednesday night the giant aircraft carriers Wasp and the Philippine Sea were flooded with light at the San Diego Naval Air Station as crews pre sumedly went on 24-hour load ing operations. A spokesman for the First Fleet said exact details of. the deployment orders and schedules were secret. He said the ships are based at San Diego, Long Beach and Alameda, Calif. "Certain Pacific Fleet units based at West Coast ports hav been alerted to prepare for de ployment to the Western Pa cific," Dennison said. "Major units as well as supporting ships are involved." The Navy said no general or ders cancelling leaves have been issued. Hitting Utility Pole Found Expensive Ogdensburg, N.Y. (U.B A local motorist found out that hit ting a utility pole can be pretty expensive. Darrell Mills received an item ized bill for $237.50 from the city water department after shearing off one of its poles. The damages included: $175 for a new pole, $15 for power the department purchased, $4.50 for operation of a gasoline motor during the interruption of elec tric service, $31.20 for services of a pumping station attendant, $12.05 to an electrician. And to make matters worse, Mills paid a $25 fine after plead ing guilty to speeding. Balogna Server Saves 32 Lives Milwaukee U.F) Maurice Bernier, 58, his retired from the police force here after 31 years and an amazing service secord of saving 32 lives and serving a million balogna sandwiches. Bernier saved those 32 lives while he was working the early shift as jailer at the Safety Building. There were that many attempted suicides among pris oners, but they were saved by Bernier's alertness. He served up the huge mound of a million balogna sandwiches while serving as bailiff in dist rict court. The sandwiches are the traditional noon-time repast of prisoners waiting in the bull pen for a court appearance. (U.R) Try as they will, skindivers have a hard time trying to match the loon ana diving duck. Researchers at Cornell Uni versity have found some physi ological and anatomical charac teristics that enable the loon and duck to excel- at underwater sports. Scientists .have found that spectacular changes in heart rate and differences in blood compo sition may be key factors per mitting these aquatic birds to descend to depths as great as 200 feet.
