W I don't trust our daughter and her boy friend. Mr. M. W. We've got to get them tied up in an engagement. Mrs. M. W. My husband and I are all upset over our 16-year-old daughter. Belle. A year ago she met a sailor at a party and after that refused to go out with other boys. When he comes home on leave, she sees him every night. I argued with her about it and she broke down and said she was in love with him and had had intimate relations with him once to prove it. She cried and said it would not happen again and that they want to get en gaged and be married in two years, when he gets out of serv ice. I can't stand this boy now. I don't trust either of them. If we let them get engaged, it would look as though we ap proved and are giving them the go-ahead signal. Mr. M. W I say the damage has been done. For the sake of Belle's reputation, we've got to get them tied up in an engage ment as quickly as possible. Belle doesn't want to have anything to do with any other boys now and I think that's a pretty good sign. Why should we force her? If the same thing happens with someone else, it'll be all the worse. MEDFORD (OR5GON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIFTEEN I think this saHor is a nice straightforward kid. He knew Belle told us and lie canie to us and told us he loved her ami would make everything all right. He took all the blame for what happened on himself. We're lucky he wants to marry her. Tha Council: These young peo ple have indeed been honest and aboveboard. They indicate thev have a strong sense of their mis take. If they had any intention of continuing this kind of rela tionship, they would hardly alert the parents to what is going on. This honesty is a very hopeful sign, but it is no guarantee for the future. The parents should discuss the matter fully and ser iously with them, emphasizing all aspects of their wrongdoing. They might suggest that the young couple talk further with a clergyman. Mrs. M. W. is wrong to show hostility to the boy. Her daugh ter was also responsible for what happened. Denying the couple permission to get engaged will be no safeguard against future wrongdoing. But Mr. M. W. is wrong, in wanting to hustle the couple in to an engagement to "make everything all right." This makes things a little too simple and will get their relationship'off on a wrong footing, giving them the feeling that marriage is the price they must pay for their sin. They may begin to resent rha punishment before the two-year engagement is up. A better approach would be the positive one pointing out. that despite their mistake, these young people have shown- hon esty and respect for one another. It is a beginning.. They should be encouraged to think about their future in practical and moral terms. (Copyright 1956. General Featurei Corp.)
