The sloe-eyed actress made several pictures overseas, includ ing "Hotel Sahara" and "Cap tain's Paradise," and doing so kept her renewing her passport and forgetting laundry in various cities. "The columnists always were reporting me missing," she 'laughed. "And I often was taken for a foreigner in Europe. The Italians thought I was Italian and the Spaniards took me for Span ish. Route 84 Sterling Gas Dealer To Roundtable Group Victor Milnes, president of Fortune Stations Inc., Medford, and secretary of the Oregon State Gasoline Dealers association, dis cussed the economics of the gas oline business and how it affects this community at the noon luncheon of the Jackson Cham ber of Commerce Roundtable Monday. Most of the petroleum used in the Medford area, Milnes said, is produced in southern Calif ornia and shipped to refineries in the San Francisco bay area. The gasoline is shipped to Cres cent City by barge, he said, and transported to Medford by truck and trailor. More Petroleum Products There are now 10 times as many products tfeing made from petroleum as there were a few years ago, Milnes said. He added that prices for gasoline and petroleum by-products have in creased much less in price than other commodities during the past several years. The transportation charges in shipping gasoline from San Francisco to Medford is 3'4 cents per. gallon, he pointed out, "which is high." Profit for the major oil company distributor added to the refinery cost plus freight rates, he said make up the wholesale price of major gas in Medford. Local dealers are not responsible wor the wholesale cost of gas. he added. Shipping Explained Small independent companies in southern California cannot ship gas to Medford economical ly because there are no indepen dent facilities in Crescent City, Milnes said. Major refineries can economically ship gasoline to Medford. he explained, because they have their own storage plants in Crescent City. Most service stations have to make six cents on a gallon of gas to "just exist," he said. About 3li cents per gallon goes for labor and one cent each for rent and miscellaneous overhead. This usually leaves one-half cent per - gallon for the operator's profits, he said. A price war is a "frightening thing" to a service station oper ator, Milnes said, as it can ruin his entire economy. Consignment Stations Major gasoline companies have recently s t a r ted "consignment stations," where they furnish the equipment and gasoline for an operator, who they hire, and con trol the prices and operations of the station. Milnes stated that, in his opinion, price wars were not democratic as they can be started by one man, station or company. This is not fair for a competitor, he said, if he wants to maintain his economy by keeping price stable because of the pressures that work against him. Eugene Price War There is now a Drice war in Eugene, he said, in which the stations are selling gas for more than four cents under their usual retail prices. A similar price war in the Medford area would cost about S60.000 a month in income to the community. Therefore, he added, price wars are only "false bargains" to the customer.
