New Light Kept Amer Washington (U.R) Addition al details have come to light on how British diplomats kept American diplomats in the dark about plans for military action against Egypt. . The British maneuvering has been protested strongly, and ca bles still are humming between Washington and London trying to get things back on the track after a virtual complete break down in diplomatic contact. As reconstructed by American authorities, here is what happened:' j Secretary of State John Foster Dulles became alarmed at the ; ominous signs of trouble build ing up in the Middle East. En voys in London and Paris were asked to find out what was going on. When they made contact with the British and French foreign offices, -American diplomats got j no inkling that a big power play jwas shaping up. And some in formation obtained now is de- 1 scribed as "misleading." Misleading Statement Recently, according to Ameri- .can sources, British Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd passed the word to Dulles that he 'planned to see him in advance 'of the Nov. 12 meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. The purpose of the meeting, it is said, i would have been to discuss a "peaceful"- solution of the Suez i crisis. Dulles took this as a sign i that Lloyd was not thinking in terms of using force. ' Lloyd also is said to have Given on How British icans in Dark on Egypt passed up opportunities in talks with U.S. Ambassador Winthrop Aldrich to keep the United States abreast of developments. Aldrich had been seeking in formation on an urgent basis. No Hint of Move Lloyd conferred in London with Aldrich Monday morning the day before the British and French started military action Bank Man Punches Would-Be Robber Roanoke, Va. (U.R) An angry bank official took a punch at a would-be holdup man today and forced the bandit to flee empty handed. The holdup man fired a pistol at branch manager Heath Child ress Jr. of the Mountain Trust Co. but the shot went wild. The bandit then fled in a car with another Man. Childress said the bandit ap proached him when Childress was opening the Melrose branch of the bank here. "It was exactly 8:43 a.m. I know because the holdup man asked me what time it was," Childress said. He said the ban dit then stuck a pistol in his back, saying: "This is a holdup, don't be funny." Childress said he became angry and swung at the man with his fist, knocking him off balance. The gunman fired one shot, then ran. . against Egypt. The British dip lomat complained about Ameri can plans to put the Israeli aggression against Egypt before the U.N. Security Council. But he gave no hint, officials said, that a military move against Suez was under consideration that day. Officials confirmed a report that British diplomats "have been confronted by the United States with evidence that British For eign Secretary . Selwyn Lloyd gave a deliberately misleading account of events to America's ambassador in London, Winthrop Aldrich ..." They said Dulles on Tuesday showed a British diplomat here an account of what Lloyd had told Aldrich the day before. This was after word of the British French ultimatum to Egypt and Israel had been received in Wash ington through press reports.
