Ak for n lanre. econnWy ruse and aave mo a?At Ocaa ' Fills today I '( I - Don W. My wife doesn't fit in with the crowd. Sue W. I don't like those people I want to move wy. Don W. My wife and I come from a small town and met at a small college. My wife was always very shy and, in gen eral, socially backward. It didn't matter much at that time. I thought her shyness was cute and we didn't have to do much socializing anyway. Now, however, I am connect ed with large firm and have a promising career as an execu tive. We have three children and live in a suburban communi ty where there is lots of enter taining. I find that I enjoy socializing very much. This is a nice crowd, and I can form excellent busi ness contacts among them. But Sue makes it very difficult. She doe.n't like to entertain. She says she can never be friends with these people. She doesn't dress or act in the right way to fit in with them. She just doesn't want to become sophisticated. Sue W. Don seems to have forgotten the time when we used to agree about the kind of people he now admires. We called them "phonies" then not sophisticat ed. Don does not realize that in accepting these people, he re jects the people who do not fit in with them. There was a time, too, when Don agreed with me about such things as married people flirt ing around and too much drink ing at parties. We thought such thinsrs were pretty contemptible. He doesn't seem to object any longer and does far too much drinking himself. Maybe I'm just a small town girl, but I can't be happy here. I don't want to bring up my children in this community. 1 feel we should get out make a new start elsewhere. I think thii is more important than business ' Nebraska is . a comparatively treeless flat state with little nat ural water but it .has the third largest bird list in the nation in cluding many varieties of tame and wild waterfowl. Th Council: Don and Sue have Indeed grown far apart and each ii in tome measure to blame. Don't criticism of hit wife's lack of social sophistication can only make her feel more left out and ill at ease. Sue'a refusal to budge an inch from the point of view ahe held as ' a young girl and to undertake the re sponsibilities of the wife of a rising business executive drives Don to try to make an even stronger effort to fit in with the crowd. Sue's solution ia rather un realistic. Don has the responsi bility of earning a living for his family. He cannot blithely pull up stakes and. start from scratch elsewhere. Besides, he must take the job for which he is qualified. In another com munity he will probably find himself among similar people, in a similar social setting. Sue must realize that she is viewing this "crowd" from a distance with the maximum of hostility. She ought to try to get to know some of the indi viduals in the crowd. She'll probably find many who share her values. She may even dis cover that she is exaggerating the amount of drinking and flirt ing that goes on. In any case, she is likely to find that not everyone participates in it. Don must recognize that it won't - do to sacrifice his dividuality and personal values in the fight to get ahead. He'll never be able to: completely satisfy himself that he has "fit in" suficiently and he will lose something precious. (COPYRIGHT 19S6. GENERAL FEATURES CORP.)
