Asides
The apprentice system is gen
erally practiced here. My girl
friend said that at a beauty shop
she visited there were a lot of
young lads acting as apprentice

Horses and Women
To complete my horses and
women research in Belgium I
visited the Boitsford race course.
A curious track. Only time you
see the horses is when they are
in the stretch. Rest of the track
is in a forest. First" time you
see . the horses is when they
come out of the woods and into
the 'stretch. Another curious
angle is that at the Stockel race
course the horses run counter
clockwise as in the United
States. At Boitsford tbey run
clockwise as in Erance. These
courses are close together. Would
be the same as if the horses ran
one way at Jamaica' and anoth
er at Aqueduct. Very confusing.

37 Will Be Missing
From Congress Roles
Following Election
Washington (U.R) Thirty
seven U. S. representatives and
senators, some of them senior
members, will be missing from
their old places in Congress re
gardless of the outcome of the
Nov. 8 elections.
They are the members of the
1955-58 Congress who retired or
were eliminated by death or by
defeat in primaries.
Missing from the Senate will
be such old-timers as Sen. Walter
F. George (D-Ga), now dean
and president pro' tempore of
the Senate, and Sen. Eugene D.
Millikin (Colo.), senior Republic
an on the finance committee
both of whom are retiring.
Missing from the House will
be such senior members as Beps.
James D. Richards (D-S.C), Clif
ford R. Hope (R-Kans ), Jesse P.
Wolcott (R-Mich.), Georse" A.
Dondero (R-Mich.), Harold H.
Velde (R-Ill.V all of whom are
retiring and J. Percy Priest
(D-Tenn.), who died in October.
All have served as chairmen of
House committees.
Lehman Retiring
The Senate is losing six mem
bers and the House 31 members
of the past Congress.
Two of the retiring members
of the House Rep. Thomas J.
Dood (D-Conn.) and Rep. Clifton
Young (R-Nev.) are running for
Senate and may return to the
new Congress as members of the
upper chamber. The Senate will
lose a seventh member when
Sen. Price Daniel (D-Tex ), who
seems a sure bet to win the
Texas governship resigns, prob
ably shortly after Congress con
venes in January.
Besides George and Millikin,
the Senate loses Sen. Herbert H.
Lehman (D-N.Y.) through retire
ment. The other three who will
not be back are Sens. Robert
Humphreys (D-Ky.), William R.
Laird III D-W. Va.) and Thomas
A. Wofford (D-S.C). They were
appointees serving out the terms
of deceased members and did
not run for election.
Of the missing House mem
bers, four have died in the past
two years. 21 are voluntarily re
tiring and six were beaten in
primaries.
House Members
Those who died were Priest,
Carl Hinshaw (R-Calif.), Chaun
cey W. Reed (R-I1U. and Wil
liam T. Granahan (D-Pa.).-
The six House members de
feated in primaries are F. Ertel
Carlyle (D-NX.). Charles B.
Deane (D-N.C), Thurmond Chat
ham (D-N.C), Ruth Thompson
(R-Mich ), John J. Bell (D-Tex.),
and Victor Wicirersham (D
Okla). Others voluntarily retiring
from the House are Robert H.
Mollohan (D-W.Va.), who is run
ning for governor; Glenn R.
Davis (R-Wis.), who lost his bid
for a Senate nomination; Char
les P. Nelson (R-Me.), John
Phillips (R-Calif.), Richard W.
Hoffman (R-Ill.), Shephard J.
Crumpacker (R-Ind.), Jackson B.
Chase (R-Neb.), Ralph A. Gam
hie (R-N.Y.), Arthur G. Klein
(D-N.Y.), Irwin D. Davidson
