FOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) Lehman Cave Area Of Nevada Scanned As National Park Ely. Nev. u.pj A federal survey team has completed a tour of the high mountains, caves and glaciers in the Lehman Caves Wheeler Peak of east ern Nevada to determine the feasibility of creation of a "Great Basin Range National Park." A report on preliminary find ings is expected to be made to the National Park Service by its Santa Fe, N.M., regional office In mid-November. If this report Is favorable, action by Congress would be required to complete formation of such a park. The Lehman Caves section of the rugged area is already under Park Service administration as a national monument. The re mainder of the proposed park is primarily composed of portions of the Nevada National Forest. One of the prime movers for expansion of the Lehman Caves National Monument into a na tional Monument into a nation al park has been Weldon F. Heald, Tucson, Ariz., author and explorer. ClaeUr Found It was Heald who last year discovered and named as the "Mathes. Glacier" a glacier fill ing the valley floor on the north cirque of 13,061-foot Mt. Wheel er, Nevada's highest mountain peak, that tops the range near the Utah-Nevada state line near Lehman Caves. . Heald accompanied a party of Park Service officers, natural ists. Forest Service executives and others on a field inspection of the area recently. The inspection and the pre liminary report, when complet ed, will discuss the various prob lems and advantages of expand In f the present monument into the "Great Basin Range National Park." Included will be effects of the change on livestock graz ing rights and game animal care. The expanded park would em brace about 28 square miles. Sen, George W. Malone (R Nev.), has tentatively endorsed the project, saying that "nation al park designation of this area which includes the only ac tive glacier in the entire Great Basin as well as the unusually beautiful Lehman caves, will be a boost for the tourist business in the entire state."
