FOURTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday. October 29. 1956 Morse and McKay Map Heavy Schedules For Final Week of Senatorial Campaign By UNITED PRESS Sen. Wayne Morse and hi? Re publican rival. Douglas McKay, lined up ambitious schedules to day for the final week of their campaign for the U.S. Senate. Yesterday Morse campaigned in Curry county, then returned to Portland last night. Today he was scheduled to fly to San Fran cisco to addiess a labor conven tion but planned to be back in fie state in time for an address tonight in Milwaukie. McKay planned a concentra tion on the Portland area for his final week's work with an over night trip to the Bend area randwiched in. Today and tomor row he planned extensive tours through industrial plants in the metropolitan Portland area. He is slated to attend a reception for John Roosevelt, son of the late president, tonight. Morse used a considerable tart of his campaign time in the Adlai Says Arguments Against End of Bomb Tests 'Defeatism' Boston OI.Rj Adlai E. Stevenson today labeled Presi dent Eisenhower's arguments against ending hydrogen bomb tests as "hopeless defeatism." The Democratic presidential candidate charged that the Pres ident offers only a "do-nothing solution" on the problem of "how to save the world from hydrogen devastation." ' Stevenson issued a 3,000 word memorandum with a covering statement replying to Mr. Eisen hower's "white paper" which at tacked the Stevenson H-bomb proposal last Tuesday. Stevenson called the admin istration's document a "cam paign pamphlet" rather than an official paper and said it was "remarkable for misstatements and distortions." Says President Hostile "After all Mr. Eisenhower's arguments are shaken down," Stevenson said, "the net effect is one of hopeless defeatism." "The President is wt only hostile to new constructive thinking by others on how to save the world from hydrogen devastation, but he quite clearly has no creative or hopeful ideas of his own in this critical field," Stevenson said. "As in so many other fields, the President simply offers an other do-nothing solution, he said. Stevenson released the state ment after his arrival here Sun day night on a flight from Phoe nix, Ariz. His l'z day stay here bidding for Massachusetts' 16 electoral votes in the November . - w, W '"1 GETS CHECK Robert Holmes, Democratic candidate for governor, received the "world's biggest check" Tuesday at a luncheon in Astoria held by the Citizens Committee for Bob Holmes. The check, made of plywood and measuring 8 by 3 feet, was taken to the bank by Holmes where Ed Paldanius, left, accepts it. Committee members present included (left) Dan Thiel, Stan Daniels, Harold Johnson, and Aubrey Hubbell. 8 election will be highlighted by a speech at a raly in Mechan ics Hall tonight, which will be carried over a nationwide tele vision network. Asks End to Tests On the H-bomb. Stevenson has taken the stand that this nation should take the lead in seeking a way to end all test explosions. In his memorandum today, he challenged the President's con tention that Stevenson's plan "allows for no safeguards, no control, no inspection." It has been Stevenson's argu ment that scientists can detect H-bomb blasts anywhere around the world. "The President again disre gards the key fact that violations of such an agreement can no more be hidden than an earth quake," Stevenson said. Nor'easfer Lashes Atlantic Coastline New Bern, N. C. Porter for flection as representative from the fourth district. The senator asserted that he. Sen. Richard Neuberger and Rep. Harris Ellsworth, faying, "Not one single bit of aid came from Harris Ellsworth in restoring the cut." McKay spent yesterday in Portland, preparing for a speech he was to deliver today before the Portland Chamber of Com merce. The former interior sec retary campaigned in Medford Saturday where he again criti cized the Morse-backed proposal to halt H-bomb tests. "I have seen war at its worst. I never again want to see the weaknesses in this country which lead to war," McKay said. The former Oregon governor will visit the Bend area on Fri day and then return to Portland to wind up the campaign. A final plea for votes has been scheduled over a Portland television sta tion on the. eve of the election. Sen. Neuberger issued a state ment today in Portland, charg ing that Republicans are resur recting critical comments he made against Sen. Morse in the past, and at the same time try ing to smooth over their praise for the senator while he was a Republican. "This praise of Sen. Morse by prominent Republicans is quite as much a part of history as the disagreements between Morse and me. at the time when he was doing his best to be a faithful member of the Republican party," Neuberger said. Roosevelt Supports 'Ike John Roosevelt, son of the late president, is scheduled to speak in Portland tonight in behalf of President Eisenhower. Roosevelt will address a public meeting spons6red by the "Oregon Labor for Ike" committee.
