So Be It i anti-fluoridationists leately seem To the Editor: One-third of the population has latent tuber culosis germs, which can become active if the general health of the individual declines. F or that reason, general health :s one of the biggest factors in the nationwide, 100-year - old campaign against TB. The Jackson County Public Health association, therefore be lieves that anything which can be done to improve the health of everyone is a direct blow against tuberculosis. It is for this reason that it has, for 37 years, conducted a teneral health education pro- Cram in Jackson county one which has received nation-wide lecognition for it excellence. It is for this reason that it is vitally concerned with dental health, as well as other kinds 01 health. It is for this reason that it provided expert, informed and Euthoritative men to give anyone interested the facts on fluorida tion the most thoroughly test ed public health measure ever , initiated. The "political campaign" for -fluoridation is being conducted by the Better Health Committee, which 'has its own donated funds. The Jackson County Public Health association, on the other hand, is interested in health education, and in facts. Its board of more than 40 members, who donate their time, are responsible for the way the Christmas Seal money is spent. If we are to be criticized for permitting our stationery to be used to call attention to a public health in formation meeting, so be it. Janet Guches, Ex-President and Case-Finding Chairman Jackson County Public Health association. The Issue Is Health To the Editor: I would like to explode one of the many current anti-fluoridation rumors. Leaping, as usual, to false con clusions, and with no effort to explore truthful fact evidenced. FOR MAYOR JOHN SNIDER HAS THE ABILITY, " THE EXPERIENCE, AND THE TIME TO DO A GOOD JOB1 VOTE FOR JOHN SNIDER a FOR MAYOR Snider for Mayer Committee bent on assailing the Jackson County Public Health Associa tion charging that group with misappropriation of funds May I point out that it is the Better Health Committee, and not the J.C.P.H.A., that is pro moting fluoridation through radio, TV and newspaper adver tizing. The Better Health Com mittee has its own bank account, has solicited and collected its own funds, and its books are to be submitted to the Secretary of State after the election just as with every political candidate or issue. Who are the Better Health Committee? They are a group of doctors, dentists, lawyers, mer chants and, mostly, just parents citizens interested in one thing, better health. Fluoridation means just that! With dental disease our most pressing health problem, and with prevention of that disease partially possible through flu oridation, this group was or ganized to help dissolve the fears based on ignorance and un substantiated by any scientific fact. Mrs. Edward Sickels, Chairman, Better Health Committee, 2608 East Jack son dr., Medford, Ore Is Fluoridation 'Pollution'? To the Editor: Well we have good water and we were told so, for many years even had signs on the drinking fountain at the corner of Main and Riverside telling the ones who come for a good drink. I belive it read 98 910 per cent pure. That means we had good water then, and still have it. And the tourists have enjoyed this good water, all of them, so far as I know, and so have the people of Medford. I and most all of Medford peo ple want to still enjoy this good water. But in order to do so. those that want it contaminated with fluoridation let them put it in the water at home, and not pollute the whole water supply. To accommodate those who want it, let the city buy a desirable amount and sell it to those who want it, giving them complete mixing instructions, and save ! the cost of that machine which , mixes it in the water. i Personally I think the fluori dation is of no help to the fully -grown ups. In the first place it isn't right to force anyone to use stuff they don't want, and then i make them help pay for it, for i those who do want it. Those who want it should put i their names in to the water com- ; mission's office, telling how many there is in the family that need fluoridation, and let the water commission furnish- the I necessary amount of fluoride j needed, and pay for it. I Fellow citizens, stand up for what you think is right. Don't , let anyone poison your minds. ! God has blessed us with good water, let's keep it that way. I S. T. Shults, j 410 Kenwood dr., i Medford, Ore. Democracy vs. Republic To the Editor: For the past 20 years the use of the word "Democracy" has been used rather loosely. People say "This 1 a Democracy, you know." Ac tually they are wrong. The Unit ed States is a Republic. We pledge "allegiance to the Flag. and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands . . ." Many people fail to understand that in a Demo cracy such as Russia has, the minority has no voice while in tne United States, which is a Republic, the minority does have a voice and as such, acts its a balance wheel to keep our Republic a free people. Let us keep this in mind as we continue to consider the many socialistic proposals such as Fluoridation, that are contin ually being presented to our people at each election. J. Verne Shangle 1445 Kingahighway Medford, Ore. She Trusts Her Dentist To the Editor: After reading some of the letters against fluori dation, I would like to protest against the impresion they give that the dentists are in favor of the bill for monetary gain to them, rather than to assist par ents. When we call a doctor to treat our ill children we wouldn't call them unless we trusted their judgment to use medicines that would cure, not prolong, an ill ness. When our dentist stresses the need for fluoridation, I know we can trust his knowledge, the studies he has made and his in tegrity, or we would have chosen another dentist. As a mother I am going to vote for Bill No. 56 because I want it for my children. Mrs. Richard W; Pedley, 932 Reddy ave., Medford, Ore. The Morse Smearers To the Editor: On Tuesday evening, Oct. 23, the TV audi ence in this area was assaulted with a 15 minute program spon sored, we were told, by the Mc Kay for Senator committee. The more I see and hear of these pre sentations, the more appropriate it seems to rename this commit tee "For the Villification of Wayne Morse by Whatever Means Possible." By far a great er share of time is spent for this purpose rather than presenting a positive case for Douglas McKay. There are many things that could be said to refute the sort oi diatribe to which we are sub jected, but I will confine myself, to point out one especially glaring error of Tuesday's "dis cussion." One of the men made the bald-faced statement that Senator Morse refused to an swer, or evaded answering, me loaded questions with which he was greeted in a full-page paid dvertisement in the Oct. 10 is sue of the Medfora Man iriD une. The exact opposite is true. as anyone who attended nis speech at the Esquire theater on Oct. II can attest. There was also a fine account of his ap pearance in the Oct. 12 issue of the Mail Tribune for everyone to read who would. It is true that Senator Morse preceded his reply with the re minder that this method of at tempting to put the opponent on the defensive, in order to divert him from a positive discission of the issues, is one of the old est and most obvious tricks in the world. He stated that he did not intend to be thus diverted, BUT, in this particular case he felt it would be a good spring board for making a number of points regarding the Issues. He then proceded to go right down the list of questions, attempting to discover the purpose of each, and answering each in a full, concise manner. As further proof of the false hood of this particular accusa tion, the very next issue of the Medford Mail Tribune carried a letter to the editor from Senator Morse, explaining his stand on the question relating to the Gore Highway bill, because he bad missed answering it in person during his appearance in Med ford. Does this sound like the action of the kind of man our Republican friends are trying to tell us about? Judge for yourself who is try ing to mislead the people of Oregon. Lenore Zapell Route 1, Box 482 Talent, Ore. Sunday, October 28, 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Proof of the Crime of FLUORIDATION Extension of remarks of Hon. Roy W. Wier of Minnesota in the House of Representatives, Thursday, May 12, 1955. Sodium fluoride, or sometimes sodium silicofluoride as used in the District, Is a virulent, cumulative poison, 85 times as toxic as the calcium fluoride which occurs naturally in many wafer sources and is deceptively claimed to be identical in its nature and action. It is a by-product of the aluminum industry, colorless, odorless, and tasteless, and, therefore, the more dangerous because undetect able. This type of poisoning does not lend itself to ready diagnosis, and usually shows up only in autoposies. Should we not be rather cautious in introducing into our drinking water, which is an element indispensable to life, a chemical so toxic that it has been used for years as a rat and roach poison? And here just let me call' attention to a strange fact. Since November 1952, several months after our water in Washington was fluoridated, (2,800 pounds are dumped into our reservoirs every day), 26 Members of our Congress have passed away and 2 Members of our Supreme Court also. This record stands out glaringly as against a former yearly average of Jwo deaths. It may be merely a rather queer coincidence. We cannot prove it one way or another now ... It is too late. Keep Our Water PURE VOTE. "NOV on NUMBER 56 Anti Fluoridation Committee 1776 Venus 1956 To the Editor: In 1776 we de clared ourselves free from the oppressive control of the King of England and shortly thereaf ter started paying the price for freedom and independence. The Revolutionary war was but the first installment. From the British Isles were heard cries of "Treason" and the lips of their leaders poured forth threats of disciplinary ac tion. How dare this maverick, uDstart of a coliriy across the Atlantic ocean, repudiate what England believed to be good for Eneland! The oppression that existed vesteryear is gone, but there are always those who try to tell us that obedience to political cliques comes first and is best for the country, irrespective oi personal principles involved. 10 season otherwise, is traitorous. Sen. Wayne Morse has been ac cused thusly by some of his op- conents and it is as uncalled tor new as it was in 177b wnen me British Emoire accused us of treasonous independence. Independence is not a vogue to praise and cherish wnen there is need of it, and condemn n others when it doesn t suit us. IndeDendence never changes, and like the earth, offers us the essential stability that prevents us from drowning in the . seas of dictatorial oppression, bui there are types of individuals that never change through the centuries that nurse the deep scarring wounds left by the dis cardment of their political phil- rsonhies. The results of their bitterness have filled our nis- tory books with what xney might have called discipline but what we all know so well as revenge wnicn is a proouci ui tpTf-Mteem and a cohort of wars. The decisive vote was cast by the Great Ruler of the universe fnr this Drivileeed nation of ceoole at its inauguration in 1776. May we never have cause nf another such supreme elec tion because we refuted these ironic nf free, unrestrained, m- cependence performance. Throughout America's annals, inripnendent liberals like Wayne Morse helped build our great- r-ess with the ever present fact before them that in all of mod ern history independence that has been trifled with and lost by a nation has never been re gained. ' Ken Corliss 1564 Myers lane Medford, Ore. AMA and "Poison" To the Editor: Do you honest ly believe that the American Medical Association would en dorse the introduction of "rat poison" into a municipal water supply? The recommended concentra tion of one part per million is not poison. Mrs. Dorothy Webber, 2324 Aloha, Medford, Ore. REPUBLICAN STATEMENT' Many Americans will recall that President Eisenhower made a trip to Korea during the cold and bitter December of 1952. Our lack of preparedness which brought that war about must never be forgotten. Shortly after the Korean Ar mistice was achieved, our mili tary programs were reviewed. A new policy of strength for the long pull was adopted. This "new look" emphasized air power and new and more effective weapons with a saving in manpower and numbers. Great progress has been made in improving the ef ficiency and effectiveness of our entire military establishment. This has been accomplished while at the same time the strik ing power and state of readiness of our forces has been steadily increased. The clear objective of our na tional defense policy, under the Eisenhower administration, is to preserve the security of the United States and its funda mental institutions. The current threat to our security comes from world communism. Another devastating1 war is no solution for this problem. It is a challenge to the free world to prevent such a war and to achieve the objec tive of world peace on terms consistent with the growth of freedom in the world. To meet this challenge, patience, imagi nation, understanding and dedi cation are required. The Repub lican party recognizes that cannot be solely a military struggle. Under President Eisenhower. the Defense Department recog nizes the obligation it shares with the rest of the executive branch, the Congress and the American people to improve un derstanding throughout the world if mankind is to avoid the destruction and horror that would inevitably result from global war using today's fantas tic weapons. The administration also recognizes that only through maintaining a sound defense as a continuing policy will we pre serve peace, even though it be uneasy, until men of good will throughout the world have had time to lay the foundations for a sound and lasting peace. ronunateiy tor we world, as well as our country. President Eisenhower combines actual ex perience in combat with a thor ough understanding of the peace ful instincts and desires of the American people. No other indi vidual is so well qualified to determine our military require ments or to direct the implemen tation of our military programs at home or abroad as our present Commander in Chief. At the same time, no nation is ahead of us in proclaiming sincerely and unequivocably its . faith in the unwisdom of war as a means of settling disputes among nations. DEMOCRATIC STATEMENT Both political parties concen trate more and more on courting the woman's vote. Good reasons for women voting Democratic are listed by Mrs. Kate Louch heim, director of wonien's 'Ac tivities, Democratic National committee. A few of those reasons are: No matter how hard Repub licans push their slogans no matter how they, use emotional appeals to try to divide Ameri cans into war party and peace party they cannot hide the fail ures of the past four years from the women of America. Adlai Stevenson says, "Trust the people. Trust them with the facts. Trust them with the great decisions." We Democrats do trust the people. From experience I know that American women can be counted upon to make their de cisions on the basis of the issues, the records of the two parties and the capacity for real leader ship of Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver. I know that' each American woman will , think seriously about the Republican Peace, Prosperity and Progress. Dulles relies upon get-tough statements and threats instead of negotiations and part nership with our allies , and friends. The Eisenhower administra tion has failed to offer or even consider a single new solution to the world's great problems. While Russian communism is making inroads all over the globe, an air of complacency dominates Republican foreign policy. Complacently too, they view our economy. When they talk about prosperity. Too many mil lions of Americans are not shar ing in our material abundance and the prosperity Republicans boast about. 25-MINUTE SPREE COSTLY Milwaukee (U.PJ Gordon G.
