Methodists Sponsor Asia Study An interdenominational for eign mission study on southeast Asia, sponsored by Women's So ciety of Christian Service of First Methodist church, will be gin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Octo ber 30, in the church, according to Mrs. Jessie Minear, secretary of missionary education in the ociety. The main textbook is "The Church in Southeast Asia," writ ten by Rajah B. Manikam of India and Dr. W. T. Thomas who has been, since 1951, field representative in Indonesia of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. This will be supplemented by other current material. The pur pose of the study is to help the class members to become ac quainted with the people of these countries; to learn some thing of the history of each country, its political background, and its industries. This area of southeast Asia was chosen be cause it is in this area of the world that new nations are be ing formed, it is stated. Mrs. Minear will introduce the course and explain the pro cedure to be followed. Mrs. Jennie Lawless will review the Buddhist religion and the role it plays in the area. Mrs. George Trobough will present informa tion on the countries of Malaya and Indonesia. A nursery will be provided for preschool children. All mem bers of the Woman's Society are urged by Mrs. Minear to attend and an invitation is extended to members of other churches who are interested in the study to join the study class. Thursday night at the home coming bonfire, a five-foot model of a Phoenix "Pir ate" blazed to the end as cheering stu dent body looked on. Preceding the bonfire, the students wound in a serpentine into Central Point, doing school yells and songs. After the serpentine, the group returned to the school for the bonfire, talks by the coaches and the team captain, and to the delight of all, the burning of the "Pirate." Queen Sally Elden reigned over the homecoming game and dance last Friday night in regal splendor. She was crowned dur ing the half-time of the Crater Phoenix game, by senior class president, John Grebb. Prin cesses of the royal court were freshman, Joan Skov; sopho more, Sylvia Yell; junior, Pat Peffley; and senior, Queen Sally. National Merit Scholarship tests were given to 20 seniors last Wednesday morning by Clar ence Mellbye, vice principal. The tests began when school resumed in the morning. The seniors sat silently and thoughtfully through the two-hour long tests. One girl said she felt "brain washed," and another stated that she'd never had her mouth closed toj such a long period of time before in her life. The Lava-liers, a small choral group which has, been inactive this year until now, is being formed again. The Lava-liers are madrigal singers with never more than 15 members, and an above average ability and in tense interest in music. Norman Carothers is their adviser. Future Homemakers of Amer ica held their annual FHA slum ber party last Saturday night with approximately 80 girls at tending. The girls enjoyed, among innumerable other activ ities, a "midnight supper" at 2 a.m. which consisted of hot dogs and the trimmings. Guests of honor at the party included Mary Prom, past president of the group; Lois Kelly, state parlia mentarian; and Lola Fisk, state vice president. Officers of the Crater chapter of FHA are, presi dent, Irma Penwell; vice presi dent, Beverly Sanderson; secre tary, Arvella Prom; treasurer, Pat Medley; parliamentarian, Jocky Cameron; historian, Linda Warren and reporter, Sharan Lilly. New majorettes will strut with the band. The newly formed group of seven girls made their "debut" at the homecoming game. Their outfits are short, white felt skirts sprinkled with rhinestones topped with black sweaters trimmed in white an gora. Head majorette is Marilynn Cordy. Rain dampened the football field and the bleachers at the homecoming game, but not the spirit of the Crater High stu dents. The football team plowed through a muddy, torn-up field to a 57-0 victory over the Phoe nix Pirates. The new majorettes with the band and Comettes went through with their drill routine in spite of the deep mud covering the field. All hearts were with the homecoming court as they made their way across the messy turf in pouring rain wearing strapless formals and high heeled shoes which wanted to stick in the mud. The coronation of Queen Sally marked the fourth time the homecoming queen had come from the class of '57. This is the first time such a succession has occurred. MEDFORD'S BARGAIN CORNER SIXTH AND CENTRAL Art Teacher Is Speaker For Society ' Warren Bayless, art instructor at WcLoughlin Junior High school spoke for Southern Ore gon Society of Artists on the topic "The Making of A Pic ture," at a meeting of the society last week. He answered a num ber of questions asked by mem bers of the group. Mr. Bayless was asked to choose the pictures to be placed on display and advised the group why he made the different selec tions. He selected "Abstract," a a casein by Mrs. Ada Andrews of Gold Hill for Barkers; "Peace ful Valley" an oil by Harry Marx of Medford for the li brary; Medford Paint store will receive "Hyatt Lake" an oil by Mrs. Ethyl Hixson, of Central Point, and "The Barn", water color by Mrs. Andrews. Hadley's Dress shop will display "Trail Riders" an oil by Clarence Henderson, Camp White. Mrs. Ada E. Castello, Medford, submitted three of her paintings along with other qualifications and became an associate mem ber of the society. Guests included Mrs. Eva Morrow, Gold Hill; Harold Skid more, Applegate; Mrs. Celeste Gossett, Medford, and John Evensizer, Evans Creek. The forthcoming art show-, sponsored by American Associa tion of University Women, was announced for the evening of November 1 and all day Novem ber 2. Japanese Women Go Ultra-Modern By RALPH TEATSORTH United Press Correspondent Tokyo U.R) American GI's returning to Japan would not recognize Susie Suzuki. She's cut her hair like Audrey Hepburn, exchanged her kimono for Western dress and is free to pick her own husband. Susie Suzuki is the modern Japanese woman ultra-modern for Japan. She has broken so rapidly with the past and won so much freedom and opportunity since the Pacific war that some of her Japanese sisters are warning her: "Take it easy, Susie." "There's nothing wrong with being modern," says Miss Kiku ko Sasaki, chief stewardess of Japan Air Lines. "It's wonder ful, and I'm glad Japanese women have more freedom now. "But we must keep the tea ceremony and the flower ar rangement. We mustn't abandon the traditions that give Japan ese women special grace and charm." Miss Sasaki wears smartly tailored clothes but no hats. She doesn't paint her fingernails on grounds that natural beauty is better. She prefers a short coif fure with ducktail effect to the Hepburn hairdo which is the craze in Japan. The gay kimono still has an important place in Japan but only at parties, festivals and weddings. Shop and office girls earning about $30 a month find an $80 kimono too expensive. They dress Western style. Miss Sasaki is among the fav ored few women employes. Air lines stewardesses take home about $70 a month. Professional models who become cover girls earn $14 a day and sometimes $250 a day. Even the geisha the teahouse entertainer is tending to go modern. Her classical songs and dances and her high beflowered hairdo remain as popular as ever.
