Family was poor and Doug sold papers on the streets of Portland to help provide food for the family. Took his first job when 13 years old to help support himself and mother. , , . Portsmouth, Ladd and Lincoln public schools, Portland. Graduate of Oregon State College in Agriculture. . Worked his way through U5G as a janitor in the science Building, working for a laundry and at odd jobs yet became president of the freshman class, president of the student body and, in later life, president of the Alumni Association. (Honorary) Doctor of Laws degree from Willamette Uni versity, Dickinson College, University of Maine and Ore gon State. , RIKIMF HARFFR Began as an office boy at the Union Depot, Portland, at Duairctdd unncLit $3 a month Aftcr fint world war soId insurance and then automobiles. Rose to sales manager which position he left to establish a small automobile dealership of his own in Salem. Through his initiative, energy and personal management, this became one of the finest and most successful dealer ships on the coast. Sold in 1955. DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE Mayor of Salem, 1933-34. State Senator, 1935-37, 1939-41, 1947-49. (When he left the Senate to become Governor no senator had served for a longer time.) Governor of Oregon, 1949-53. Secretary of the Interior, 1953-56. Chairman (14 years), Willamette Valley Project Commit tee (For natural resource development). Member, Executive Committee, Port of Portland Development. (Ms WAR SERVICE WORLD WARS I & II State President, Automobile Dealers Association. State Director, American Automobile Association. State President, National Society for Crippled Children. Trustee, Salem Presbyterian Church. Trustee (now serving), National Presbyterian Church of Washington, D. C. Pesident, Salem Chamber of Commerce. Commander, Capitol Post No. 9, American Legion. Master of Salem Lodge No. 4, A.F. and A.M. Campaign Chairman of the Salem Community Chest (4 years). ' Member of many community boards including Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, Y.M.C.A., etc. Served in World War I as an infantry combat officer with the 91st Division. Severely wounded in action and did not fully recover for 13 years. In World War II, he left his prosperous automobile busi ness to re-enter the service serving as a captain and later major. Member, Order of the Purple Heart. Awarded citation for outstanding service to the American Legion, District of Columbia, 1955. Grandfather came to Oregon for the Hudson Bay Com pany in 1841 and family has resided in Oregon continu ously for more than 100 years. Married in 1917 to Mabel C. Hill of Portland. Three children: Douglas, Jr. (tragically killed in an auto mobile accident at the age of 19), Shirley McKay Htdley and Mary Lou McKay Green, both of Salem. Seven grand children.
