Newspaper Page TextBIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Baptist Pastor Visits Arizona Indian Missions The Rev. James W. Necly and Mri. Neely of the First Baptist church, left Wednesday for Ari zona, where they will visit mis sionaries of the Conservative Baptist Home Mission society working among Navajo Indians. They will be at the Navajo Children's home, Cottonwood, Ariz., for Sunday, where Mr. Neely will preach at the morn ing service there. The Neelys .ill also visit missionary couples lationed near two different government trading posts on the While in Arizona they will represent the Medford church at the Western Regional meet ings of Conservative Baptists to be held in Phoenix, Ariz., Oct. iG through Nov. 1. Dr. Melville Chatfield, profes sor at Western Conservative Baptist Theological seminary, Portland, will be guest minister Sunday, Oct. 28, in Medford. The Rev. Haddon Robinson, Jsistant to the pastor, will have tharge of the other church serv ices until the return of the pastor. Activities Set At Phoenix Church A Halloween covered dish supper will be held this even ing at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian church. Phoenix. Those attending are asked to wear costume. Games are planned for all ages and a film "This High Call ing" will be shown. The young people of the church will meet at the home of Miss Peggy Chisum Sunday eve ning and the following Sunday will meet at the home of Don Mackintosh. Saturday, Oct. 27 they will hold a scavenger hunt at 7 p.m. Sunday at noon a congrega tional corporation will be held following the morning worship. The budget for the year 1957 will be explained. MARTIN LUTHER' SUNDAY The film "Martin Luther" will be shown at the First Presby terian church, Medford, at 7 p.m. Sunday. The Westminster fellowship group will sponsor the showing. The public is in vited to attend this service and see the biographical and docu mentary film on the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation. Rr. Robert Kingsbury Communion Breakfast Scheduled for Sunday In observance of Reformation Sunday, Oct. 28, a communion breakfast is being sponsored by the Methodist Men of the First Methodist church, Medford. The spaker at the breakfast, will be the Rev. Robert Kings bury of the Immanuel Methodist church. Cave Junction, Ore. The Rev. Kingsbury is a graduate of the University of Oregon and , the Boston University School of Theology, he will speak on the theme "Summoned to Witness." Members and friends of the church are invited to attend. Fellowship Meeting In Central Point A district fellowship meeting will be held at the Pentecostal Church of God in Central Point. Saturday, Oct. 27. at 2:30 and 7 p.m. A basket lunch will be served by the women of the church at 5:30 p.m. The church is ocatcd at 513 Pine st. Those receiving eight - year looks At Books' New Series Starts "The Nun's Story" by Kath ryn Hulme will be reviewed by Dr. Raymond E. Balcomb of the First Methodist church Sunday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The review of this recently published book, states Dr. Balcomb, will be the first of a new series of Sunday evening programs to be called "Looks At Books." The review will be held in the Meeker Me morial chapel of the First Meth odist church. "People of a Book"will be Dr. Balcomb's sermon subject at the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services of wor ship. The Youth choir, under the direction of Mrs. George Sloniger will sing at the earlier service. The Chancel choir, un der the direction of Mrs. C. R. Adamson will sing at the later. Soloist for both services will be Rompton Barlow. Sams Valley Gospel Church Group To Meet The ladies of Sams Valley Gospel church will meet Thurs day, Nov. 1 at the church to do missionary work. Clothing is repaired by the women and sent to Korea. At the present they are working on a layette. Clothing has been sent to India by the group. . All interested women are in vited to attend these meetings which start at 10 a.m. Those planning to attend should bring a sack lunch. Anyone having clothing to give to this cause may leave it at the church. Those unable to bring them should call Mrs. Floyd W. Sherman at Gold Hill 5-9073 and it will be picked up. At the morning service the sermon will be taken from the Book of Joshua, another in a series of "Preaching Through the Bible." Sunday evening the pastor, the Rev. W. Hum, will preach on "Getting Prayers Answered." Church Group Names First Woman Pastor In North Alabama Birmingham, Ala. (U.R) Mrs. Mabel Wick made history this fall when she became the first woman associate pastor ever ap proved by the North Alabama Methodist Conference. But her congregation at the Gate City Church sayi she is a "natural." Mrs. Dick, the wife of a min ister and mother of an eight-year-old daughter, first was li censed to preach in Livingston, Tenn., in 1953. Her main work has been with children and young people. "I've been in church work all my life," she said. "I wouldn't be at home doing anything else." Her work keeps her operating on a busy schedule. Besides the duties at the church, she has the fulltime job of running the af fairs of a home and family. How does she plan to relax? By going to college. DeMille's long-heralded produc tion, "The Ten Commandments," begins a reserved seat, two- sliows-a-day engagement at the Criterion Theater in New York City Nov. 9. This run will follow an invita tional opening of the night be fore to be attended by a distin guished assemblage of top civic, religious, educational and busi ness leaders, high government officials and key luminaries from every branch oi the entertain ment world. "The Ten Commandments" tells the story of Moses. The huge cast of famous performers includes Charlton Heston as Moses, Yul Brynner, Anne Bax ter, Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne DeCarlo, Debra Paget, John Derek, Sir Cedric Hard wicke, Nina Foch, Martha Scott, Judith Anderson and Vincent Price to cite a few. There are hundreds of speak ing parts and more than 25,000 extras, the greatest number ever used in a film. Ten years in the planning, three years in research and pre liminary exploration and three years in the writing, "The Ten Commandments" required the longest Holl ywood shooting schedule of all time. This did not include the many months of filming in Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula, which were under taken to bring authentic Bibli cal settings to the screen for the first time. A paramount picture in Vista- Vision and Technicolor, "The Ten Commandments" is the sev entieth motion picture in the long career of DeMille. Local Pastors To Go To Portland Service The Rev. and Mrs. Darold Jones, pastors of the First Church of God, plan to be in Portland Thursday and Friday, Nov. 1-2 for the annual Pacific Bible college ingathering serv ice. The local minister and his wife are both graduates of Pa cific Bible college. West Coast Seminary of the Church of God. The Medford representatives to the Ingathering will partici pate in the dedication of truck loads of foodstuffs for the college cafeteria. The giving by dozens of congregations of the church will enable the college manage ment to serve low-cost meals to the student body during the school year. Clarence Perry, college man ager, has also announced, in ad dition to the foodstuff dedica tion, the formal dedication of the new Men's dormitory. Youth Fellowship Group To Attend Youth Rally . The Youth Fellowship of the First Church of God, joining with the other youth groups in southern Oregon, will attend an October Youth Rally at the First Church of God in Klamath Falls. Three carloads of youth are scheduled to go from Medford. The Rev. Milton Chugg, pastor at Woodburn, Oregon, will be guest speaker. The Rally will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, and conclude with the 8 p.m. service. WORLD COMMUNITY DAY First Christian church.
