vv 2 5? 4 CHANGES PLEA Joseph Carlino (above), named as co-conspirator in the acid blinding of labor colum nist Victor Riesel, has changed his plea from in nocent to guilty. Carlino and seven others in New York are accused of plot ting the attack which blinded Riesel March 5. WHAT IS IT? Bruce, S.D. (U.R) Farmer Art Peterson has crossed ordi nary corn with sunflower plants. The cross results in a plant that looks unmistakably like corn, except that it stands 14 feet tall and has the strong root system characteristic of sunflowers. The corn has kernels dusty red in color, instead of the customary yellow. BENNY'S BACK ! . . and so are Mary, Rochester and the rest of the gang. Morton Milling Co. 10 West Jackson The Medical Roundup by More From Gorman's Book -On Mental Diieaia Tragedy In a previous column I wrote about a marvellous book in which Mike Gorman, executive director of the National Men ta 1 Health Commit tee, t e 1 Is of the alarming situ ation that ex ists in regard to mental dis ease. The oth er day, on the ur Alvarei street, a wom an with a can in her hand asked me for money for research on some disease so rare that I haven't seen a case in 30 years! Now, I am all for spending money for a search for a cure of any now incurable disease, but I hate to see the almost com plete lack of research on the commonest disease of all the one that costs our people more suffering than any other. We Americans not oniy hate to pay for research on this disease, but we don't want to hear mention of insanity; and we do not want to admit what everyone knows, that it is inherited. To keep up our courage most of us lie man fully about this. I do not blame. Foundations for having refused in the past to give money for research when it might have gone, to men of the type who know before they begin how their so-called re search will come out. It will con sist purely of theories. Fortu nately, at last a new day has dawned, and a new group of biologically trained psychiatrists is coming to the fore men who are brain physiologists, who are at home in a laboratory, and who are accepted- by all scien tists as good and able brethren. Aware of Criticism On Page 13 of his book Gor man says he is well aware tha,t he will be criticized for his "ex cessive" emphasis upon the phy siological and hereditary factors underlying mental illness. He says, ."I am prepared to be read out of the Inner Temple by the high priests of the Oedipus Com plex and the rampant Id. For a number of years I was an active communicant in that Temple, cocking an attentive ear while its theologues concocted a 'witches brew' of sterile term inology to describe psychiatric phenomena they had no capa bility of treating." He goes on to say that he ex pects to be attacked by that "horde of self -constituted 'ex perts' on human behavior; the blithe popularizers who fear not to tread where scientists are wary to walk. Fortified by a massive ignorance of the physi ology of the human mind and nervous system, they lecture, write, preach, and advise about juvenile delinquency, thumb sucking, marriage, and so on." Gorman quotes Dr. Karl Men niger as once pointing out that psychoanalytic indoctrination has had a bad effect on many a young psychiatrist because it has kept him from observing his patients and studying them with open eyes and ears. Why should the young doctor talk to pa tients and record what they say when he knows in advance what they should or will say? As Dr. Alan Gregg, the distinguished former medical head of the Rockefeller Foundation once said, too many psychiatrists have speculated about insanity when they should have been observing. "Psychiatrists speak a dialect, a special lingo, more productive of resentment than comprehensions or interest on the part.of their medical breth ren.". Dr". Gregg went on to say that psychoanalysts usually re sent requests for proof of their theories. Dr. Jacques Gottlieb, a research psychiatrist, appear ing before a Congressional com mittee, doubted if what some analysts have called research can be dignified with that name. -v ll-r r in - tn i Emerltuj Consultant In MedJelae, Mayo Clime Emeritus Protestor ut MmUi IB. Mlfn PnundaDnn Gorman quotes with amuse ment Professor L. J. Meduna's recent statement to the effect that the flag of the newly or ganized Society for Biologic Psy chiatry should have on it as a rebellious and defiant motto: "A telegraph pole is just a tele graph pole and not a phallic symbol." Perhaps now that real scien tific research is being done in psychiatry, legislatures, founda tions and wealthy persons will be willing to give money to sup port it. I hope so. Nowhere else in Ihe field of medicine is finan cial help more needed. Throbbing in the Ears Many older persons worry be cause, when they put their ear on the pillow, they hear a thump ing. Some of them keep going from one ear specialist to anoth er wasting hundreds of dollars The specialist cannot help them because their ear is normal, Actually, what they hear is the pulsation in the big blood vessel which goes through a channel in the bone that houses the inner ear. Why we don't all of us keep hearing the thumping, I do not know. Obviously, there is nothing anyone can do to stop the thump ing; the heart must continue to beat. What is hopeful is that the beat can again become in audible. I know because, in my own case, for a while the sound was annoying, and later it dis appeared. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail. Chrysler Operations Said Nearing Normal Detroit (U.R) Chrysler Corp. assembly operations were expected to return to normal to day in the wake of a wildcat strike which idled 35,000 work ers and stopped 1957 model pro duction. The wildcat walkout flared at Chrysler's parts stamping plant earlier this week when a num ber of workers left their jobs to protest the promotion of 30 em ployes to a higher classification. The dispute ended late Thurs day when the striking members of United Auto Workers Local 869 voted almost unanimously to return to their jobs and to settle their trouble through regu lar grievance procedure. Chinese Protest Sale Of Japan Fair Items Tokyo (U.R) A crowd of 300 Chinese stormed offices of the Japanese Trade Fair in Peip- ing to protest the sale of "shod dy goods and refused to leave until they were promised a public apology, Japanese news reports said today. The protest movement started when exhibitors began selling items at the trade fair on Tues day, reports from the Commu nist China capital said. On Wednesday an angry crowd sur rounded the offices and refused to leave until Thursday morn ing, when fair officials agreed to apologize in Peiping newspapers.
