October 28. 1938 Morse, McKay Extended Invitation To Visit Site of Sarena Mine Claim By UNITED PRESS Charirs McDonald, one of the owners of the controversial Al Sarena mining claim site in the Rogue River .National forest, to day extended an invitation to Sen. Wayne Morse and Douglas McKay, Morse's opponent in the November election, to visit the site. At the same time, McDon ald denied a Morse campaign charge that $350,000 has recent ly been offered for timber on the claims. McDonald announced that core drilling, postponed when Al Sarena became a political issue, is now under way. He said pans of "cuttings" showed a good mineralization of "gold, lead, zinc and other elements." Mors Said Wrong Again McKay's campaign speeches yesterday ignored the southern Oregon mine and dwelt on Morse's support of the Adlai Ste venson H-bomb testing ban pro posal. McKay told a Portland lunch- Smokescreen of Confusion Seen By Kefauver Lancaster. Pa. U.R) Sen. Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn.) charged today that the Republi cans, including President Eisen hower, have thrown "a smoke screen of confusion" around the issue of stopping the hydrogen superbomb tests. "If we permit the confusion spread by Nixon, Dewey and even President Eisenhower him self to confuse the voters en this question," Kefauver said, "then we may see a continuing and ac celerating armament race cul minting in a global war and fol lowed by dark age from which mankind may never emerge." Attacks 'Betrayal' The vice presidenial candidate switched from the farm to the H-bomb issue with his start of a one-day swing through south eastern Pennsylvania. Thursday night, he teamed up with Adlai E. Stevenson in Springfield, 111., to attack the Eisenhower a d m i n i s tration s "betrayal" of the farmers. Both received an enthusiastic recep tion from more than 5.000 at a "farm day" rally. Kefauver was clearly at his best. Farmers at the rally cheered and booed the Republi cans. And Stevenson, after a dinner conference with his running mate, announced that Kefauver would team up with Chairman Allen Ellender (D-Miss.) and Harold Cooley (D-N.C.) of the Senate and House agriculture committees to tackle the farm problem immediately after Nov. 6 if the Democrats are elected. Kefauver's schedule through this part of Pennsylvania today included Lebanon, Pottsville, Heading and Philadelphia. Sat urday he flies to Martinsburg, W. McKay charged that Morse "agrees" with the Communists, a comment obviously referring to Soviet Premier Bulganin's re cent intervention in the H-bomb testing issue. Pickets Greet Smith Morse exhorted Willamette valley audiences in Salem and Corvallis to send McKay "back to that struck garage in Salem to start selling Cadillacs again." On the state political scene, Gov. Elmo Smith was greeted by Young Democrat pickets when he arrived at a Portland high school to deliver a speech on United Nations Day. The sign painters charged that Smith had voted against the United Nations while the opponent, State Sen. Robert Holmes, had favored the organization. He jested with the pickets before entering the building. At the same time, Holmes was in eastern Oregon urging a new tax base, "particularly in areas now too dependent on one or two industries." At Nyssa he charged the Republicans, "eager to please the Portland Arlington club." have forgotten places like Malheur county. Hongkong Firms Hurt by Red Chinese Trade Policy Hongkong (U.R! Communist China's recent policy on direct teade with Southeast Asia and Europe has made Shanghai an active port again and hurt Hong kong import and export firms, according to shipping sources here. Big ocean lines are traveling in and out of Shanghai with full cargoes, according to officers and crew members of European freighters plying the China-Hongkong-Southeast Asia-Europe route. Ships flying British. Danish, French, German, Japanese. Dutch, Norwegian, Soviet and Chinese Communist flags have been seen moving in and out oi the harbor at close intervals, they said. A Communist newspaper claimed recently that "now there are several foreign liners enter ing the port of Shanghai every day." When they leave they bring some 6.500 kinds of pro ducts of China to 68 countries, the paper added. An Improvement Ship's officers reported there was noticeable improvement in handling of entrance and clear ance procedures by the Shang hai port authorities and local police. They said port officers ap peared to be well educated and were polite in dealings with seamen. However. 'they said there is a shortage of experienced pilots at Shanghai. Sometimes a ship must waiti several days outside the harbor for pilots to take it m. A United Press Survey of daily shipping schedules here shows that more ships have visit ed Hongkong from Shanghai and North ports recently. Two years ago ships mostly British were plying largely between Hong kong and South China ports. A demand for direct shipment of Chinese cargoes, particularly to Southeast Asia, has grown shipping companies have rear ranged routes. Ships on the Japan-Hongkong-Europe run now are calling at China ports before proceeding here, the survey shows. Several local shipping executives agreed. Besides Chinese farm products, ships outbound from Shanghai are carrying steel bars, news print, soda ash and galvanized wire. Ground nuts remain the biggest single Chinese export item consigned to Europe and the United Kingdom. "Now China sends products directly to Singapore, Thailand and other places." a local import-export businessman said. "That means no more business for Hongkong firms in China trade. Since June 15 there have been no reports of ships being fired upon or intercepted by national ist Chinese gunboats. At that date the 2-181-ton British freight er, Dorinthia, leaving Foochow for Shanghai, was fired on by nationalist guns from White Dog island.
