The Crusaders go to Rogue River Friday night. The Medford team needs the victory for a clean cut third con ference championship in row a well as for an unbeaten sea on in the league. Rogue River is out of the race but could prove a spoiler, knocking St. Mary'i kack jnto a lle wjth Talent, which the Crusaders tripped last week. Passing hasn't been the whole of the SM attack this year hut Colch Millard Webb pointed out that 63 per cent of the passes quarterback Ron Pruitt has thrown this fall have been com pleted. Webb said the club was working on the receiving end in order to make the aerials go when needed. Spirit At Best Web said that Crusader spirit is the best its been this year and added that St. Mary's is always "up" for Rogue River. At Rogue River coach Tinker Hatfield said he had a problem of building up Chieftain morale. He reported that the Chiefs will aim to stop or slow the fast SM backs. The running of Fred Bond in the Chief backfield has helped in practice. He has been sidelined from drills by a shoulder hurt. Also on the bruised list are guards Bill Dixon and Richard Olympius. Race Suspension Costly to Arcaro Lexington, Ky. W.Pi Eddie Arcaro, racing's riding million aire, figures the suspension handed out by the Kenneland stewards "cost" him $17,000 plus. Arcaro, set down for careless riding in the Spinster Stakes at Kenneland last Friday, was all set to ride the Wheatley Stable's Bold Ruler in the $300,000 Gar den State Stakes at Camden, N.J., Saturday. With 15 or more starters in the Garden State, the winner will take down $170,000 plus. If Arcaro had the mount on Bold Ruler, he figures the ride would 6e worth 10 per cent of the win ning total, provided the Wheat ley colt reached the wire first. Arcaro appealed the suspen sion and Leslie Combs II, chair man of the Kentucky Racing commission arranged a second meeting. With th full member ship on hand ,'odnesday. the commission voted to uphold the Kenneland stewards. The coach pointed out that Washington fumbled seven times against USC last week on a dry day. TAYLOR CONFIDENT Stanford, Calif. OJ.R) The Stanford Indians held their last full scrimmage of the week Wednesday and Coach Chuck Taylor was confident that his boys are ready for Saturday's tough game against the USC Trojans. End Gary ' Van Galder and center Bob Long, came off the injury list and were impressive in drills, but tackle Chris Plain aggravated an old leg injury and may miss the USC game. BEAVERS CAPABLE Corvallis, Ore. iU.R) The Oregon State Beavers have quite a goal as they prepare for Satur day's game against UCLA they haven't beaten the Southerners since 1948 and haven't even scored on them since 1950. But Coach Tommy Prothro ex pressed the opinion that the Beavers are capable of giving the Bruins a good game this year, with the help of a strong passing attack. SLEET STORM Pullman, Wash.-JfU.R) Coach Jim Sutherland worked his Washington State Cougars in a driving rain and sleet storm Wednesday in preparation for Saturday's game with the Col lege of Pacific Tigers. Sutherland continued to make changes in his lineup in line with his policy of changing until he finds a winning combination. He moved right halfback Rev Alvarado to fullback to under study Eddie Stevens for the COP game. PEYSANO HURT . Seattle, Wash. U.R) Half back Dick Peysano suffered his second injury of the season Wednesday and University of Washington officials said he probably would not see action against the California Bears Saturday. Peysano was running with the varsity when the season opened, but injured his knee in the Idaho game and didn't get back into action until last week. His latest injury was not revealed, but Coach Darrel Royal said "It would probably keep him out of action for awhile." GRIFFON STARTER Los Angeles U.R) Coach Henry (Red) Sanders has named Edison Griffon as starting tail back for UCLA against Oregon State Saturday at Corvallis, Ore. Sanders had the Bruins drill with a wet ball on a soaked prac tice field Wednesday after hear ing reports that the game Satur day might be played in rain. USC DISPLAYS PASSING Los Angeles UR) The Uni versity of Southern California displayed its potential passing power Wednesday during a workout in which Ernie Zampese and Frank Hall did most of the tossing. Zampese is scheduled to take over for Jon Arnett after the Stanford game Saturday. While the backs practiced passing, the linemen worked on blocking. Eagle Pointers, IV Clash In Crucial Gridiron Fray Eagle Point Championship of the Rogue league and Dis trict 6 A-2 southern division in football likely will be decided Crater High Phoenix Host Friday Night Central Point There'll be no loop or district honors at stake but the determination of both clubs should be high here Fri day night when the Phoenix and Crater high football teams clash. The Phoenix Pirates don't rank with some of the clubs fiom the school in past recent years. But Phoenix, most often in an underdog role, have gen erally given the Comets a tough battle and will be out to con tinue that tradition. Crater play ers on the other hand are still smarting from a 32 to 7 loss at the hands of the Pirates last year. The Comets and Pirates both are somewhat hampered by in juries. Allen Barnes and Jerome Mc.Qaude, both backs, will he on the Crater sidelines and Neil Greens center, may see action only if needed. Karl Koellner, end had a temperature and cold jesterday but probably will be able to play. Barnes has a twist ed knee and McQaude is taking it easy after being knocked out' twice in the Ashland mix. Wallace Out For Phoenix Don Wallace, full back, is out with a shoulder injury. Jim Heath, alternate quarter, and Dale Haggard, guard, have knee ailments. Fred Fiytinger. back, has a groin strain but may see duty. Possible starters for Coach Leonard's Warren's Comets are Jerry Kime and Karl Koellner, ends; Bill Morse and Dick Davis, tackles; Roger Seaman and Don Hubbard, guard; Ray Birge, center; and Wayne Allen, George Juveland, Ron Harrison and Don Goyette, backs. For Phoenix mentor Jack Woodward may call on Jim James and Archie Trott, ends; Jack Rinn and Stan Swan, tackles; Jack Hoffbuhr and Jim Waldron, guards; Ron Daugher ty, center, and Dennis James, Jim Stout, Jack Thompson and Gary Simmons, backs. Stout is a promising junior, who, however, lacks experience and has been with the squad only three weeks. Hoffbuhr, a freshman, may be. replaced by Scott Hall for defense. Some fish are being taken by Tyee. Salmon angling on the Coquille river is fair to good. Good catches of steelhead are being made in the Hells Gate to Galice ranger station section of the Rogue river. here Friday night Eagle Point high will be host to Illinois Valley. Both are un beaten in the division and cir cuit. A victory for IV will give it the division toga since its reg ular A-2 slate will be finished. The Cougars will still have Rogue River to meet in the Rogue circuit but are favorites. Eagle Point, if it should beat IV, still will have Henley to tackle in the subdistrict but is the choice over that club. The two clubs each hold vic tories over three common foes. The Eagles downed Phoenix 33 to 6 and IV did it 25 to 6. Over Glendale EP won 39 to 12 while the Cougars were victors 26 to 6. Eagle Point downed Brookings 30 to 6. The IV-Brookings score is not available. He re ported team spirit better than ever. The Eagles have been pol ishing on offense they have used in past games more than devel oping anything new for the Cou gars. The Eagle attack this year has been led principally by Jack Greb, halfback, who has scored 127 points, gained 1512 yards to tal and netted 1067 from rushing alone. Errol Treshham just about kept pace with Greb until side lined by injury. Roberts of Colubus, Ohio, and white maned Tom Robbins of Larch mont, N.Y., were favored to score quarterfinal wins today in the North and South InvitatioD Seniors championship. Roberts, who has won every seniors title except the North and South, was only one shot over par Wednesday to move from the role of dark horse to co-favorite. The Ohioan was runner-up here the past two years and he was co-medalist this year. Robbins, current Westchester Seniors titlist, has played two consecutive rounds of sub-par golf over the stern No. 2 cham pionship course. Trapshooting Set At Club Sunday Medford Gun club will hold a practice shoot on Sunday. Skeet, 16-yard and handicap evens are planned. The grounfts will open at 10 a.m. for the day's activities.
