Parham of the University of Tennessee has de signed a calculating machine that turns out grades for a uni versity course in two hours and 20 minutes. Computing grade av erages for the course now re quires 50 man hours. , The complete computation for one student requires only 16 seconds, Parham said. Further more, the machine makes no er rors. The computer, about the size of a typewriter case, has 10 knobs on tap, each with its own grade scale for a particular test or project,' and a dial which reads the final grade either as an exact numerical grade or let ter grade. The basket was handed down to Young by his 85-year-old aunt Jennie Kiesman, who said she remembered crossing the Atlan tic with her parents when she was seven years old.
