Workers in Wildcat Strike al Chrysler Detroit U.Ri Workers at a tamping plant employing 3.200 went on a wildcast strike yester day, and Chrysler Corp. an nounced its speeded-up 1957 model production will halt with in days unless the trouble is settled. Chrysler employs some 70.J 000 hourly workers in the De troit area. The plant makes body and chassis components lor all Chrysler cars. The valkout was a repeat of last week's work stoppage at the Nine Mile Road stamping plant. Then and again early today, sev eral hundred workers had bnen promoted to higher paying gas welding jobs without regard to seniority rights. Local 869 of the United Auto Workers, representing the 3,200 hourly workers at the plant, an nounced it would call a meeting of the membership as soon as possible. (Special) The Department of Defense will riace lumber and plywood pur chase orders on Oct. 27 and Oct. CI, Congressman Harris Ells vorth said today. Ellsworth, in Oakridge on a campaign tour, heard the report via telephone from Washington officials. The Defense Department, he raid, will place $2,306,000 in (.urchase orders for lumber and plywood in the October total. Ellsworth said the announce ment was in response to his in tervention on Sept. 15 when he urged executive and defense de rertment officials to bolster the present market by expediting lumber and plywood orders now under current appropri?tions. Ellsworth observed at that time that such action would provide reeded benefits to labor, indus try, and the government. BIG PEA YIELD Standish, Me. (U.B Ar thur Wescott claims a pea-raising record. He harvested 94 bushels of peas from a half-acre garden. The average crop is 100 bushels per acre. New Orleans (U.R) An air search began today for a shrimp tramp two days overdue with two persons aboard. Agriculture Council Schedules Meeting The Jackson county agricul ture council will meet Monday, Oct. 29, to set up several enter prise committees, according to W. B. (Ben) Tucker, county ag riculture agent. The committees will conduct studies anad make recommenda tions in February or March for improvement of the enterprises. The enterprises include home ex tension, horticulture, farm crops, weed control, forestry, communi ty development and youth ac tivities. Similar programs are being conducted in 11 other Oregon counties. Tucker said. 8 Still Hospitalized At Cottage Grove Cottage Grove MM Eight persons remained hospitalized, four of them in serious condi tion, today following a fire and explosion at the Cottage Grove Gas Company. The injuries occurred when a 13,000 gallon butane gas tank exploded following outbreak of a fire yesterday morning. In vestigators were seeking cause of the blaze. ' Reported in serious condition with first, second and third de gree burns were Firemen Har old Dean, Lynn Wilson, John McKy and Wayne M c C a 1 1. Others hospitalized included Fire Chief Ernest Shipley, Police Chief Ed Jones, Fireman Wilbur Dodge and Paul Stock, driver of j a wrecking truck who was near-; by at the time of the explosion. Shipley also suffered a broken arm. ; Democrats Lead Voter Registration in Oregon Portland (U.R) Democrats lead Republicans in Oregon voter registration by nearly 37, 000, according to a state-wide tabulation by the Oregon Jour nal. Registration figures show 450. 267 Democrats413,389 Republi cans and 12.974 others. The newspaper said the tabulation was official in 33 of the states 36 counties. The total of 876,630 is 25.114 more than were registered in 1952.
