October 24. 1958 MHS Preps For Ashland Mix Friday A number of Medford High footballers have ailments but the Black Tornado should be at near full strength for its Southern Oregon conference date at Ash land on Friday, head coach Fred Spiegelberg indicated today. Only player among Medford's top line talent expected to miss the Grizzly fray is guard Dean Rickard. who suffered a knee ligament injury against Eureka. Fullback Loren Christean and tackle Bruce West have missed practice because of colds. Half back Cordon Owsley was hospi talized Monday night, yesterday and last night for treatment of boils. The Tornado wound up its drill last night with about a 20 minute scrimmage. It worked on defense with much attention on pass defense since Ashland has done much throwing in recent games. Individual work is on the agenda tonight with tackling drill, blocking for linemen and pass defense for backs. Workout Monday was light and was hampered somewhat by the absence of nine players who were attending the regional con ference of the Oregon Associa tion of Student Councils. HOCKEY ARENA New Haven, Conn (U.R) Yale university announced today that it will begin construction next year on a S750.000 hockey arena to be named the David a Ingalls rink in honor of the pub lisher of the Cincinnati Times- Star and his son. TWO-WAY CHASE The 1957 championship race in Southern . Oregon confer ence basketball is figured to be a two-way race between Klamath Falls and Medford. Klamath finished second to Medford last season and both clubs entered the 'state tour ney. Much of the Klamath hope will be based on two tall boys, Glenn Moore and Cliff Sutherland. Both are re ported to be around 6-8 now. Medford will have - height in Neil Plumley, around 6-6, Mike Stearns and Larry Sless ler, 6-3, and second team all stater Dick McLaughlin, 6-2. Basketball Referees Clinic Here Tonight An Oregon School Activities association clinic for basketball referees will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in Room 4 at Med ford Senior high school. Hoop officials of the area also will take the opportunity to organ ize for the season. Election of a commissioner of referees is planned.
