As peo ple will re member, some of the sons of the last King of Spain suf f e r e d from this disease. It is called he- AJvarez mop tlllia. I was just reading about a re cent convention in New York, where the world's experts on this disease met and discussed their latest discoveries. Unfortunately, the chemical processes underlying the clotting of blood after a cut are so com plicated that it has taken men many years to learn that in this disease the main inherited defect seems to be the presence of a chemical that slows the change of a substance called prothrom bin into one called thrombin. A while ago a substance was iso lated from blood thijj, in the case of bleeders, will facilitate the proces of clotting. Unfor tunately, it occurs in only minute amounts, and now the problem is to get enough of it so that it Citrus Tower Attracts Tourists in Florida Clermont, Fla. (U.R) A citrus tower is the newest tour ist attraction in Florida. The 210-foot high tower has been constructed in the heart of the state's citrus belt. From its observation platform, 525 feet above sea level, tourists can see 40 miles in all directions. Thousands of acres of orange groves stretch out in neat rows from the tower's base, .which is located on U. S. Highway 27. An express elevator whisks vis itors to the top of the tower. An estimated 8 million Amer ican children take music lessons. Read and Use Classified Ads HERO BUSTED TSgt. PACIFIC HIGHWAY Vi Mile North of Big Y can be used as a medicine. Every so often in this column I will be speaking of the dis asters that can come to children when both of their parents hap pen to be "carriers" of a disease. Carriers are persons who, while they have inherited a tendency to a certain disease, do not de velop it themselves. Often, how ever, an expert can show by certain tests that they are not quite normal. Children Can Escape Harm When a man who is a carrier marries a normal woman their children can escape harm, but when he marries a woman who is a carrier of his disease, sev eral of their children are likely to come to grief. We know now that this true of bleeders, and hence a man who comes of a bleeding family had better not marry a woman who shows in her blood traces of the abnormality that produced bleeding. Similarly, man who is a carried of diabetes had better not marry a woman who is a carrier of diabetes, and a man who is a carrier of epi lepsy had better not marry a woman whose electroencephalo gram is typically epileptic. One of the next big advances in medicine must come now through a study of carriers.
