arsenal.
The fire started in the car
penry shop and touqhed off the
sprinkler system. But it spread
throughout the rest of the build
ing and whipped by strong
winds, leaped to others.
Fire Chief George Hink said
a shift in the wind helped check
the flames. Hink said they en
dangered another building on
the Fogel property which con
tained the paint shop. He said
it held large amounts of inflam
able solvents and lacquers.
Firemen had to stretch hose-
lines as far away as the arsenal
because of a lack of sufficient
hydrants in the immediate area.

Grant Hubbell, senior vice presi-
dent of the Ladies Auxiliary of
the VFW Steelhead post of Sha
dy Cove, together with Mrs.
Harry Birch, past president, and
two members of the Medford
VFW Auxiliary, drove to Eu
gene Saturday, Oct. 6, where
they met -the national VFW
Auxiliary president at a lun
cheon held m her honor at the
VFW hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Garland Baker,
of Hastings, Neb., are visiting
their niece and family, Mr. and
Mrs. Orage Houston, of Trail.
Mr. Houston's mother, Mrs. Em
ma Houston, of Gold Hill, enter
ed the Rogue Valley Hospital
Saturday for treatment and observation.
Mr. and Mrs. Cary Hopkins, of
Baldwin Park, Calif., are visit
ing with Mrs. Hopkins sister
and famly, Mr. and Mrs. J. P.
Perkins of Shady Cove.
Two Shady Cove residents ac
cepted employment in Medford
recently. They are Mrs. Charles
Brewer, who is working at Crat
er Lake Motors, and Miss Rae-
dene Hicks, who is employed in
the county agent's office in the
court house.

and baby daughter, Jacqueline,
of Albuquerque, New Mexico,
are spending their leave period
visiting with Mrs. Gleason s par

Klamath recently, where they
were guests of Mrs. Martin's
sister, Mrs. James Leggett.
Arriving from California for
a visit wth Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Rogers and family, of Elk Creek,
Trail and to attend the dedica
tion of the new Milo academy,
near Canyonville, were Mrs.
Roger's sisters, Mrs. Etta Tilte,
of Hanaford, Calif., and Mrs.
Charles Reasons, of Paso Robles,
Calif., her niece, Marilyn Rea
sons, of Paso Robles, Calif., and
her brother, Raymond Brown,
of Hanford, Calif. While visiting
here they drove to Crater Lake.
At the dedication of the academy
they visited the Roger's daugh
ter, Arlene Rogers, who is a
sophomore there.
Mrs. Lucy Scott, of Trail, is
staying with her daughter at

Mrs. Irwin Howe, of Trail, is
visiting her daughter and family

Mrs. Jim Hopkins, accom
panied by her sister, Mrs. Floyd
Deeders, have been visiting the
Hopkins family in Shady Cove.
They are on their way home to
Kellogg, Idaho.
Spending several days visiting
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Floyd Kelley, of Shady Cove,
have been Mr. and Mrs. Ray
mond Nendal, of Orcutt, Calif
who were returning home to
California after . spending the
summer at their home on Orcas
Island, located among the San
Juan Island group in Washing
ton. The Kelleys and Nendals
met while both couples were va
cationing at Marathon, on the
Vaca Key, Florida, one winter.
They both spent two weeks
there and since then have kept
up tneir friendship through cor
respondence. Saturday evening
the Kelleys invited friends to
see the colored pictures which
the Nendals have taken on vari
ous trips. Guests present were
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Shafer and
son, Cleve, of Prospect, and Mr.
and Mrs. Earl Sheppard of
shady Cove.

Tourists Move Hermit

Zambelli crashed into the
plate glass window of a store
after only two hours in the
race. The shame was too much.

and became a hermit.
But Zambelli had failed again.
A group of tourists found him
m the mountain cave1 where
he had lived for years alone
with his dogs living on what
he could find in the woods.
Zambelli moved farther back
into the mountains today in
search of his lost solitude.

Jackson, of Shady Cow, and
then went on to Medford and
Yreka, where they visited with
another daughter and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Edwards of
Yreka. They were on a goose
hunting trip in the area.
Bill Kennedy, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Kennedy, of Shady
Cove, fell while -playing in the
school gym last week and suf
fered a mild concussion. He was
confined to bed for a few days
but is recovered now.
Fred Cochran, of Oakland,
Calif., stopped off enroute to his
home, from Albany, Ore., for a
brief visit with Mr. and Mrs.
Carroll Watson, of Shady Cove.
