Traveler's Aid Bureau Helps Over Million Chicago (U.PJ More than a million .persons were helped last year by the 108 bureaus main tained by the National Travelers Aid Association. In a recent study to determine who uses the services offered by the organization, it was found that travelers from 7,270 Ameri can cities from Abbeville, Ala., to Zwelle, La., had asked for help. Also victims from 89 for eign countries had registered with the society. Illinois, with two bureaus, top ped the other states by giving aid to 123,000 persons. Califor nia, with seven offices, served 99,303 tourists. Ralph Collins, executive secre tary of the Chicago office, said that the basic problems handled were simple ones such as giving directions. However, he explain ed that 23 per cent of the people had more complex troubles which required the service of professionally trained case workers. What does it cost to ride 15 miles in a taxi in your section? However, there was a catch in it. The taxi skipper, who spoke perfect Eng lish said: "What is on the meter is exclusive of the driver." It is evident that the average European thinks Barnum underestimated the sucker birth rate in the United States. The various European tourist agencies should have a form in which an agreement be tween a hotel, a restaurant, a taxi driver could be recorded. An attempt to over-charge could then be referred to the police. Activity Everybody moves fast in Hol land. Haven't seen anybody pro ceeding slowly yet. Yet they don't appear in a hurry. Just packed with energy. The great majority use bicycles for trans portation. There are special paths for bicycles on the main streets. Most of the cars are small. There is a city speed limit, but nobody pays any attention to it. The cyclists also ride at top speed: You real ly have to be an experienced traffic dodger to avoid bei..g knocked over in a Holland city. The fact is, Holland has a high er percentage of traffic acci dents than any other country in Europe. Smokers The Dutch are great smokers. There are about two tobaccon ists on every block. Cigars are preferred. Those smoked are practically all of Dutch manu facture. Havana cigars are very expensive. Only the diplomats who live at the luxurious Hotel Indes can afford to smoke them. However, cigarettes have many followers. Never saw so many different brands before. One small shop I visited had over 200 different brands of cigarettes in stock! Haven't seen many pipe smokers. That surprised me. Be cause Dutchmen are usually por trayed smoking a pipe. Breakfast There is one thing I definitely have in common with the Dutch. That is a liking for ' a hearty breakfast. Even so, the Dutch morning meal is a little too hearty for me. It includes fruit, cereal, ham or bacon and eggs, several varieties of bread, cheese and coffee. Tips Restaurants and hotels in The Hague add a 15 per cent "ser vice charge." That takes care of the tips. Or so it is alleged. In any event it is going to take care of my tips.
