New York Times Backs Eisenhower; Criticizes Nixon New York flJ.R-' The New York Times today endorsed Pres ident Eisenhower for reelection but criticized the GOP choice of Vice President Richard M. Nixon as his running mate. The independent newspaper supported Mr. Eisenhower in 1952. Its 1956 endorsements ap peared in an editorial in today's editions. Commends'Both Candidates It commended both the Pres ident and Adlai Stevenson for sharinR a middle-of-the-road po sition and having in common 'a distrust of extremist positions and a clearly demonstrated faith in both the philosophy and meth od of moderation." The editorial said there were two ''persuasive" arguments in favor of the reelection of the President: "First, despite disappoint ments, there is much in the rec ord of the Eisenhower adminis tration that is of real and lasting value to the country. "Second, it is a matter of . major importance that the mod ernization of the Republican Party and its rescue from the rut of reaction into which it had fallen after 20 years out of pow er be carried forward another stage under the leadership of Mr. Eisenhower. Nixon Worked Hard The newspaper said the selec tion of Nixon was one of the things which have not gone the way it wished they might have gone, but it said Nixon had worked hard and has grown with his job. The editorial said it continued to hold the opinion that Steven son was the strongest candidate the Democratic Party could nom inate for the presidency. But it said it sharply disagreed with Stevenson's statement that selec tive service might be ended "in the not far distant future." - ijjiji iy , M'JUjj i Is- If""'' In j ':. fe' " 1 SERVICE AWARD Mercy Flights, Inc., of Medford presented Congressman Harris Ellsworth an award for outstanding service and help to the non-profit air ambulance cor poration and the people of southern Oregon.
