October 14, 19SS SHADY COVE-TRAIL Carnival Night Planned Shadv Cove-Trail The rcu- r meeting of the Shady Cove i'TA was held at the Shady Cove school Tuesday, Oct. 9th. Preced ing the meeting color slides, to gether with a taped commentary, were shown by Mrs. Al Cooper of Shady Cove. Two films, one of the prehistoric gardens near Port Orford, Ore., and one en titled "Lament of a Trucker's Husband." were viewed by members. The business meeting was tak en up mainly with plans for the coming Shady Cove carnival to be held Saturday. Oct. 27, at the Shady Cove school gym, start ing at 7 p.m. Thursday and Fri day nights, Oct. 25 and 28. are designated as work nights at the gym to set up booths for the car nival. Help is needed for these nights. Mrs. Bill Kennedy, chairman of the ways and means commit tee, announced the workers for the various booths and said that several booths are still not tak en. They are, the bounce ball, bean bag toss, comic photo booth and the witches pot. Anyone who would like to help in any of these booths is asked to contact Mr. Kennedy at once at 2631. Mrs. Jim Sawyer ar.d Mrs. Arthur Greenley: tickets, Mrs. Tory Haynie and Mrs. Car roll Watson. Ray Mullen will be master of ceremonies and Mrs. Mullen will have charge of the prizes. Prizes will be awarded the children for the best and most imaginative costumes. A door prize will be given. The evening closed with serv ing of refreshments in the cafe teria by Mrs. Jim Vanderlip and Mrs. Dee Stockton. Queen candidates are: eighth grade Eda Larson, seventh grade. Judy Watts: sixth grade. Gloria Col lines, and fifth grade, Mary Weis brod. Residents in the area were sad dened to learn of the death of Mrs. Claude (Pat) Close of Big D'.itte creek. Trail. Mrs. Close was with her husband. Claude Close, who is working in Rose burg, when she suffered a heart attack Monday evening, Oct. 8. She was rushed to the hospital but passed away shortly after ar rival. She had been active In community affairs until recently, when ill-health forced her to give up many of her activities. She was a past president of the La dies Auxiliary to Steelhead Post No. 6881 V.F.W., a Gold Star mother, past member of Shady Cove grange No. 931. of-which her husband is past master, and belonged to other groups. She is survived by her husband. Claude Close, of Roseburg and Trail, her son, Leon Close of Mcdford, and one granddaughter, Judy Close, who is attending col lege ip California. Mrs. Bert Connor, who under went surgery recently at the Canyonville hospital, has return ed home and is convalescing. The regular meeting of Our Ladv of Fatima club will be held on Thursday', Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.. at the home of Mrs. Frank Selto of Elk Creek. Trail. Those attending are asked to bring a sack lunch and mem bers are urged to be present to help with plans for the coming bazaar and other events. Eighty donors offered blood at the Bloodmobile in Shady Cove on Tuesday. Oct. 9. with "0 pints of blood being taken. Mrs. Ernest Segessenman. chairman, wishes to thank all those who helped with this proj ect, and especially the chairmen of the various districts, Steelhead , Post No. 6381 VFW. for the use of the hall, and the Ladies Aux iliary for the serving of the cof fee and donuts. The regular meeting of the Shady Cove Garden club was held on Monday. Oct. 8 at the home of Mrs. Walter Turner, of Trail. Cohostesses were Mrs. Ce cil Kee and Mrs. Miles Williams of Shady Cove. Mrs. John Hoist, of Gold Hill, gave a talk on "mushrooms." There were IS members and guests present. Henry Sweek of Jnglewood, Calif., is a house guest of Mrs. Zella Tullis, of Laurelhurst Road. Trail, and her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Goode, of Shady Cove. Harry Goode, son Ralph and his ne phew, Donald Gray of Mcdford, spent last weekend on a hunting trip to Cliff Springs in Klamath county. Honored queen. Sandra Saw yer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sawyer, of Trail, appeared on KBES-TV last week and told about the candy sale of Bethel No. 56, Job's Daughters, for the benefit of the leukemia fund. Mr. and Mrs. William Helin, of Superior, Wis., are visiting their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Al Matheson, of Shady Cove. Mrs. Edgar Vanderlip, of Shady Cove, is vacationing in Huntington Park, Calif., where she is a guest of her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Flour noy. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hunt, of Shady Cove, are parents of a baby girl born recently at a Med ford hospital. The baby has been named Theresa Marie. Mr. Hunt's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wagner, and chil dren, of San Lorenzo, Calif., arc visiting them at present. Kenneth Mills, formerly of Lancaster. Calif., and now of Shady Cove, has opened the Mill's Radio and Television Re pair shop at his home, next to the Jcanette Johnson residence, in Shady Cove. Mills has worked in radio and television repair in Chicago, 111., and in Lancaster, Calif., where he was employed in the radio and radar standard laboratory of the Northrup air craft. Mr. Mills is married and the father of two pre-schoolchil-dren. When questioned as to his reason for moving to our area, he said, "we like it here, and it is a good place to raise children." Mrs. Langston has rented her house to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Allen and family, formerly of Canyonville. The Aliens have two children. Patsy, who will en roll in the fourth grade at the Shady Cove school, and a 6-mos. old baby boy. Mr. nand Mrs. V. H. West, of Chehalis. Wash., spent several days visiting with Mrs. West's sister and husband. Mr. and Mrs. Ole Hornscth of Shady Cove. A number of ladies from this area attended the Siskiyou dis trict garden clubs flower ar rangement meeting, held in Phoenix last week. Those attend ing were Mesdames Edwin Stro ther. Miles Williams. Tom King, William Shepherd, Floyd Kelley, Pearl Adair. Bob Chamberlain. Scott Brill. Howard Ferguson, Delmar Loan. Verne Wilson and Walter Turner, all of this area: and Miss Ann Forbes, of San Diego. Jim Landry, of Trail, is in Sacred Heart hospital in Med ford for treatment and observa tion. Mrs. Alberta Hughes, of Rid dle, Ore., mother of Mrs. Walt Messecar, of Trail, is reported to be improving at the Community hospital, and is expected to come home this week. She suffered in juries and bruises in a car acci dent about two weeks ago at Dodge bridge. , On Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Shady Cove gym, there will be a benefit card party sponsored by the Shady Cove Grange No. 931, held in conjunction with Grange booster night. Proceeds from this event will be given to the Shady Cove-Trail fire depart ment. Entertainment will be furnished and refreshments serv ed free of charge by the Grange ladies. Admission will be by donation. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chubb of Shady Cove, vacationed over the past week end at the coast. They went from Reedsport, Ore., to the Trees of Mystery, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wilson of Glendale, Calif., and Mrs. Wil son's sister, Mrs. Ina McCanta of Visalia, Calif., spent several days vacationing with Lloyd Wilson's brother and family. Dr. and Mrs. Verne Wilson of Shady Cove. Mrs. Dick Bartuss. of Shady Cove, has been called to Fuller ton, Calif., by the illness of her sister, Mrs. Claude Richards. Her sister's condition is serious, but a letter received this morn ing by Mrs. Tom King, of Shady Cove, aunt of Mrs. Richards, said her condition was improved. Benny Nork, of Shady Cove, is in a Medford hospital for treat ment and observation. Mrs. Bert Clark, of Big Butte creek, Trail, expects to leave the last of this week for San Diego, Calif., whare she has been called by the illness of her sister, Mrs. Hugh Caywood. Another sister, Mrs. B. W. Cain, of Eagle Point, will accompany her on the trip. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Sturgeon, and children, of Torrance, Calif., have purchased approximately 100 acres from the Bert Clarks on Big Butte creek, and plan to build a home there soon. They have a home in Medford and will remain there until they can build. At the last meeting of the Shady Cove Rotary club, mem bers saw color movies of the 1954 Santa Anna Boy Scout jam boree, showing the full week session of Boy Scout activities held there. The Southern Oregon Child Guidance clinic is beginning its fourth year this year along with the United Medford Crusade. A member agency, the clinic re ceives about 18 per cent of its budget from the UMC. The clinic has helped more than 300 troubled children and their parents in the three years of its direct service program. Several more children have been helped through the clinic's other two programs. Consultation and education reaches a wider range pf chil dren's problems. The clinic strives in its three programs to ward a goal of working for bet ter health and welfare for all children. As different groups meet to study and understand healthy growth of personality, motiva tions, and behavior and begins to accept different behavior, a more positive atmosphere is shown through the courtesy of Willard Hubbell, Boy Scout exe cutive, of Valley Forge, Pa., who sent the films to his father. Grant Hubbell. of Trail, member of the Shady Cove Rotary club. Films of this nature show what can be accomplished by Ameri can youth today, when guided in the right direction. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shough and children, Donnie and Barbara, spent several days visiting with Mrs. Shoughs' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Cooper, and taking advantage of the hunting season. Mrs. Walter Turner, of Trail, was an honored guest at a birth day dinner given for her by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Larson, of Ash land Sundav. Oct. 7. The clinic works with other agencies and individuals work ing toward this goal, and shares in planning. Other Ways The Southern Oregon Child Guidance clinic has grown in other ways besides expansion of services. In the past three months the clinic had the addi tion to the staff of Dr. Harry K. Daniel, child psychiatrist, who is acting as assistant to Dr. John Waterman, medical direc tor, mental health section, state board of health, in four coun ties, giving four days to the Jackson county health depart ment for the clinic. Projective testing (specialized personality, testing) has been added as an extra service in studying a child's problems to be used in situations where the understanding of the meaning of tMe behavior is quite com plex; Dr. Norman Sundberg. clinical psychologist from the University of Oregon comes to the area one day a month to give the tests. Intelligence tests are availa ble through Dr. Sundberg's help or through the cooperation of the county schools' psychomet ric testing programs. Professional literature, ment al health films, and mental health plays are added each year for use in the educational pro gram.
