October 12. 1958 SOC Red Raiders Play PSC Vikings Saturday Ashland A Southern Oregon college football crew, which has a few aches and hurts but is de termined to make the best of it, appears on Fuller field Saturday night against the Portland State college Vikings. It will be the first showing of the Red Raiders on the Ashland turf and will be the Oregon Collegiate conference started for the Southern Ore gonians. Coach Al Akins has fore warned his Raiders that they'll need more of the same spirit that they had in defeating Chico and that they can't let down if they are to launch their OCC slate with a victory. The Port land Stater; won't carry tre mendous weight but they will have speed and they have good passing and some fine breakaway runners. Pass defense has continued to get attention through the week since Harvey Neffendorf of the Vikes is expected to be one of the best flingers the SOC team will face this season. The fleet backs are Lee Foster. Curtis Knight and Julius Strong. Port land has a puncher in 195-pound Chuck Withers. Slowing Injuriai Raider injuries aren't entirely crippling but are of the hobbling and slowing nature. And there an willing and eager replace ments for the lame Fullback Don Korns is slowed by groin -and ankle injuries and Ralph Clarno, over his bad ankle and looking good in drills may get the call in that spot. Tackle Jim Bird, still pestered by a bum knee, may start but will have Modesto Jimenez ready to spell him. Quarterback Bill Seymour is bothered by a hip hurt and his replacement, Arlen Smith, is still on the doubtful list with the side of his face still numbed by an injury. Halfback Chuck Crandall has a turned ankle and his game status wasn't immediately known. Center Ray Thiess suf fered a gash over his eye in the PLACED ON WAIVERS Cleveland U.R) Halfback Bob Smith and rookie tackle Don Goss have been placed on waivers by the Cleveland Browns, who got down to the 33-player legal limit this week. The Browns had been allowed two extra players for the first two weeks of the current NFL season because Goss and Pres ton Carpenter were members of the College All-Star team. r". .'ill?
