Sawmill Operator
Defends Donations
Of Pay to Morse
Roseburg (U.R) Paul Hult,
operator of a Roseburg sawmill,
today defended the donation of
a half day's pay by several of
his employees and the proceeds
of the lumber they manufactured
during the time to the campaign
fund of Sen. Wayne L. Morse.
Hult, of the Hult Lumber
company here, said there was
nothing illegal about the dona
tions which the men and the mill
made from working a half-day
of overtime in behalf of Morse.
Sen. Barry Goldwater (R.-Ariz.)
had asked the Senate elections
sub-committee to investigate the
donations to ascertain whether
the mill had deducted federal in
come and other taxes.
"Goldwater is just sore be
cause it was done by Demo
crats," Hult asserted. "They
don't care when the Republicans
do it," he added.
Hult said 31 men had worked
the overtime shift and that after
deductions, $424 in wages along
with the proceeds of the lumber
handled, were turned over to
Morse's campaign.
The 31 men who worked rep
resented only part of the mill's
crew and the work was volun
tary, Hult said.
Red Tape Stalls Boy In Joining Family
Sydney, Australia (U.R)
Thirteen-year-old Lynton Band
Austin flew to the United States
today to rejoin his mother, nine
years after she left him behind
i'i Australia because of tangled
government red tape.
The boy has never seen his
American stepfather and barely
remembers his mother. Mrs.
Walker E. Austin of San Luis
Obispo, Calif.
She married Austin while he
was serving with the U. S. armed
forces in Australia during World
War II.
Lynton is her son by a prev
ious marriage.
Only Two Visas
But when Mrs. Austin sought
permission to join her second
husband in the United States

only two of her three children.
Believing the mistake would
seen be rectified, Lynton's moth

follow as soon as possible.
It finally took an act of Con
gress to correct the mistake. It
passed a bill last January to
waive immigration restrictions
and admit the boy to the United
States.
"I don't understand it all,"
Lynton said as he left Sydney,
"but I'll be very glad to see my
mother again.''

Slogans of Nominees
Will Be On Ballots
Salem (U.R) Oregon county
clerks have been notified by Sec
retary of State Earl T. Newbry
to place the slogans of nominees
for circuit judge after their
names on the judicial ballot for
the general election.
The action came after Circuit
Judge George R. Duncan issued
a writ in a mandamus proceed
ing filed by Circuit Judge Aired
P. Dobson of Multnomah county.
Judge Dobson had alleged that
Newbry had refused to certify
his ballot slogan to the Multno
mah county elections registrar.
Newbry explained his refusal
by referring to an opinion from
Attorney General Robert Y.
Thornton that only the names of
a nominee for circuit judge
should appear on the judicial ballot.
