Is That So? Did you know that the swift, fastest of all free-flying birds never perches on horizontal sur faces. Its feet are too weak to support the wciaht of its body They rest only when clinging to Sizes S, M, L 700 vertical surfaces with the help of their spiny tails. How then do these swifts get their food, drink, make contact with each other and gather nest ing material? Necessarily in full flight and usually at speeds exceeding 50 miles an hour! Living on insects which they catch on the wing, swifts na turally suffer grievously in peri ods of prolonged storms when flying insects are not available. At such times, both young and adult swifts have been known to perish in great numbers. As for nesting materials, they snatch floating plant cotton from the air or else tear or break free bits of grass or twigs as they fly past. The familiar chimney swift, for example, grabs brittle twigs with its tiny feet while in full flight and if it doesn't break them loose the first time will try repeatedly. Succeeding, it glues the twig to a vertical surface with sticky mucous in some dark spot usually the inside of a hollow tree or a man-made un used chimney. The wattle-birds of New Zea land make a fine helpful pair. As far as I know, they are the only birds with different bills. The male's is stout and only moderately curved, the female's much longer and more slender. So, the male uses his stronger bill to dig away bark and soft wood exposing the burrows of grubs, while his mate, the fe male, then picks out the grubs with her slender bill. And shares, them, of course. Most Adaptable Bird What's the most adaptable bird? Quite likely the raven: you'll find them living in burn ing deserts and over-wintering m Greenland: from torrid to frigid zones! Besides, many na turalists credit the raven as among the most resourceful and clever birds. In one instance a pair of ra vens was observed in Greenland outsmarting a husky. One pulled the tail of the dog to distract its attention while the second darted in to snatch a bit of food from the enraged animal. A shrike has a strong, sharp, hooked bill almost like a hawk's, admirable for killing prey, but it lacks talons with which to tear it apart. So, un like any other bird, it pursues its prey through the thickets until the hunted creature be comes either confused or ex hausted; then with the use of its powerful bill, it impales its victim upon a thorn or a barb in a wire fence, so that it be comes easy to dismember. When food is plentiful, the shrike or butcherbird as it is sometimes known kills many more victims, usually mice, than it can eat and the surplus is left impaled upon thorns or barbs for future attention. Cherry Pasted Around Sometimes a row of cedar waxwings will pass a cherry or other small fruit from bill to bill until one of them finally swallows it. Nuthatches of the Persian deserts build their nests, which may weigh as much as 50 pounds, entirely of mud attached to a rock. The entrance is just large enough to admit the tiny bird, by squeezing, but too small for squirrels or other raiders. The nuthatch came by its name honestly: it opens nuts by the ingenious method of jam ming them into a crevice and then cracking (or hatcheting) them with repeated blows of its strong, pointed beak. Although open-toed like any other perching bird, the dipper or water ouzel can walk under water. In high mountain coun try, it takes delight in bobbing into the ice-cold water head first, and submerging for sev eral seconds walking along the bottom feeding on beetles, lar vae and other water-dwelling insects. Its plumage is at once so dense and oily that it can stand temperatures ranging 50 below zero.
