TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) Jack Morris Among Top PCC Rushers Los Angeles (U.Ri AU-Amer ican halfback Jon Arnett of the University of Southern Cali fornia has taken over the rush ing lead in the Pacific Coast con ference from his teammate, full back C. R. Roberts, the PCC commissioner's office revealed today. Arnett has Rained 351 yards rushing and averaged 6.8 yards a carry in his first three games trt surpass Roberts' 312. Charles Morrell of Washington State and Jack Morris of Oregon each have 224. In total offense, however Stanford's John Brodie leads with 541 yards. Brodie gained all but six yards of the total from passes which have been re sponsible for scoring five touch downs. Arnett ranks second in total offense with 475 yards and Swinton Aldrich of Washington State follows with 385. Brodie has completed 48 of 78 . passes. Norm Becker of Call fornia leads in pass receptions with 15 for 193 yards. Jack Brown of Oregon tops pass in terceptions with two. Hat 29 Points Arnett, the 1955 Ail-American leads in scoring with 29 points while Dean Derby of Washing ton has 19. Washington State has boomed to the lrad in total team offense. The Cougars have gained 1.342 yards in three games for a 447.3 yard average a fame. Washing ton ranks second with a 413.3 yard average a game and South crn California has 388.7. Washington State took over the lead on its passing attack which has averaged 263.3 yards a game. Stanford has recorded 217 yards in passing and Cali fornia 163. The Washington Huskies head the total rushing statistics with a 327 yard average. Southern California was second with 284 and Oregon third with 264.3 yards a game. In total defense. Oregon has allowed only 183.7 yards to be chalked up against it, lonowea by UCLA with 223.7 and Cali fornia with 280.7. Hopalong Cassady Silences Critics Detroit U.R Howard (Hop- along) Cassady, the red-haired All - American halfback from Ohio State, is .rapidly silencing the critics who said he wouldn't make the grade in pro football because of his size. The 22-year-old Cassady, who weighs only 178, has played two regular season games with the Detroit Lions to date and has piled up 137 yards in 25 car ries for an impressive 5.5-yard rushing average. But Hoppy, who has always accepted his football success modestly, was quick to point out that two games do not a season make. " I like what I've seen of pro . football so far." Cassady said. "It's tough, though, because they're all good players in the pro ranks. And they all hit hard." This season is the "acid test" for Cassady. How well he does with the Lions this fall will de termine whether his pro football career will cover only two season or will continue several seasons after his two-year con tract with the Lions is fulfilled. Hansell To Take Texas Position Portland (U.RPhilI Hansel, for the past seven years coach of the nationally famous Mult nomah Athletic club swimming team, yesterday announced his resignation. Hansel said his resignation would become effective Nov. 1 He plans to move to Houston, Tex., where he has been offered a position with "better oppor tunity". Next fall he will become as sociated with a Texas university with the objective of building a team to compete nationally. The state of Washington is as large as all New England plus Delaware. Green has alter nated in the number one full back post with Jim Jones, a jun ior, since early in the fall prac tice sessions. CURING FUMBLE-ITIS Pullman, Wash. U.R) The Washington State Cougars had a long drill Tuesday designed to cure a case ox lumble-ius which has brought no joy to Coach Jim Sutherland. The coach said fumbles badly hurt the Cougars in the Idaho game last week. He sent his charges through a rugged line scrimmage and worked the back- field even more ruggedly hanging on to the ball. OSC ON DEFENSE Corvallis, Ore. iU.R) Coach Tommy Prothro ran his Oregon State Beavers through a defen sive scrimmage Tuesday in prep aration for Saturday's game against the Golden Bears of California. Quarterback Ted Searle was on the doubtful list as the result of a leg injury suffered against Iowa last week, but tackles Er nie Zwahlen and Ted Bates who missed the Iowa game with injuries should be ready for action. OFFENSE UO KEY Eugene, Ore. W.R) Offense will still be the key item for the University of Oregon Ducks, and Coach Len Casanova is drilling his charges along that line for Saturday's game against the Washington Huskies. Casanova reviewed Oregon's performance last weekend when they were shut out 6-0 by UCLA and said the study clearly point ed up that the Ducks lacked of fensive punch. TAYLOR SERVES NOTICE Stanford. Calif. ,U.R) Coach Chuck Taylor of the Stanford Indians has served notice that he is not taking Saturday's game against the San Jose State Spar tans too lightly. He staged a tough offensive and defensive scrimmage Tues day, during which reserve tackle Jack McKenna was helped off the field with a painful back in jury. Bob Turley kept throwing me fast balls all day. He kept them hifth, too, until the 10th. Then he got one a little down and that's the one I jumped on. When I saw the ball start out to left field I kept hoping it would sink. I felt if it didn't, Enos Slaughter was bound to grab it for just another out. But the next time I looked I saw the ball going over his head. I could seen Junior Gilliam coming in with the winning run so I just trotted down to first. A single was all we needed and that's all I wanted. Larsen's Curve Better Turley looked as fast to me today as Don Larsen did Mon day when he pitched that perfect game against us, but Turley's curve wasn't as good as Larsen's. Regardless, he pitched a tre mendous ball game. Luckily for us, Clem Labine was a little bit better. The way I see the series now. we're in better position than the Yankees. We're playing Wednes day's game in our own park and that should give us a big edge. We haven't been hitting like we should be. but I have a hunch we're going to snap out of it Wednesday. . Anyway, I'm glad my base hit gave us another shot at the Yankees. We all sure would've been dragging if the Yankees had wound it up by shutting us out for the second straight time today. But like they always say in baseball: Tomorrow is another day. They expressed the desire to get out the "yes"' vote on the issue. Waltonians, at their Monday meeting named Col. Paul Wei land to present their views at the Oct. 19 Senate committee hearing here on Rogue river base, flood control, irrigation and reclamation matters. The chap ter has previously taken the stand that the best way to stop Rogue river floods is by proper land use and by development of small watersheds to hold water where it falls. Waltonians and the Rogue soil conservation district currently are working on a development program for the Bear Creek watershed.
