October 2, 1951 Registration Places Are Listed in County Saturday, Oct. 6, will be the final day voters may register for the Nov. 6 general election, Mrs. Be.eth P. Hopkins, county clerk, reminded residents today. Fire halls and the Jackson county courthouse will remain cpcn until 8 p.m. Saturday. A voter mut re-register if he has not voted in one election in the past two years; if he has moved within his precinct or into another precinct or to an other county in the state: if the name has been changed by mar riage; or if he desires to change from one political party to an other. According to Oregon law, it is necessary to live in the state for a minimum of six months in order to be eligible to yote. Air Force B29 tanker plane crash landed in a driving rain at Yo kota Air Force base near Tokyo today but all 11 men aboard es caped serious injury. The plane was returning from a training refueling mission and was coming into the field on in struments and ground control when it veered off the runway, went through a fence and came to rest in a field. An Air Force spokesman said that according to a "preliminary report" none of the 11 men aboard was injured. U. S., Iceland See Hope of Settlement Washington (U.R! The Unit ed States and Iceland' today shared a glimmer of hope that they can settle their differences over Iceland's demand for the custer of American troops there. The possibility of a settlement favorable to both nations devel oped during preliminary diplo matic defense negotiations at the State Department. ' Secretary of State John Fos ter Dulles was expected to give his estimate of the negotiations at his press conference today. The first round of talks on the future of U.S. troops and bases in Iceland began late Monday with Dulles and Acting Foreign Minister Emil Jonsson partici pating. Conferees will meet again Wednesday and perhaps set a date and place for later for mal talks. After the preliminary session, the United States and Iceland said in a joint communique they had a "general and friendly" ex change of views. The meetings, they said, "gave rise to hope that once negotiations are under taken they will lead to fruitful results." Weather Observer Trainees Are Needed Weather observer trainees for several positions in seven west ern states are needed, according to Bob Church of the Medford weather bureau station. He said a trainee is urgently needed for duty at the weather bureau of fice on Sexton mountain, 10 miles north of Grants Pass. Starting salary for the posi tion is S3. 175 per annum for one who has had no previous observ ing experience. Additional infor mation may be obtained from Church at the Medford airport weather station. Bicycle, Vehicle Collide Near Ashland Ashland John Bowlin, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Bow lin, Ashland, was struck by a car Sunday afternoon while riding a bicycle on Highway 66. Driver of the car was identi fied as A. J. Allerheilagen of Grants Pass. The boy was not thrown from his bicycle, al though the rear wheel was twisted. His injuries were not serious. Allerheilagen took John to the home of his parents. The youth was returning from a fishing trip to Emigrant Lake when the accident occurred. Russians Get First Glimpse of New Ford Washington OJ.R) The Rus sians are getting a chance be fore any of the rest of us to watch the 1957 Fords go by. One new Ford began cruising the streets of Moscow Monday, and others will follow. The same models won't appear in the show windows of American auto deal ers until Wednesday. Furthermore, the Ford in Mos cow cost only $1. Those in hometown, U.S.A., will cost well, considerably more. The very first car off Ford's 1957 assembly line a glisten ing,, black sedan was sent to Moscow. It is one of nine sold to the State department for use by the U.S. embassy in the Russian capital. Already it is drawing ad miring crowds of Muscovites. RING FAKES FASHIONS Paris (U.R) International police have uncovered a large fashion-faking ring operating in Switzerland, French authorities said today. They said the ring" sold hats and fashion accessories bearing fake labels of famous designers. Dallas Carrier Plant Sold To Ohio Firm. Dallas, Ore. (U.R) The Gerlinger Carrier company of Dalles, a manufacturer of large fork - lift trucks and straddle type industrial units, has been acquired by the Towmotor cor poration of Cleveland. Ohio. C. E. Smith, president of the Ohio company, announced ac quisition of the local firm yes terday. Gerlinger will be oper ated as a wholly owned subsid iary of Towmotor. Purchase of the Dallas firm was culminated through the ex change of Towmotor stock for all outstanding Gerlinger stock.
