Wives ot rotato Farmers ump In Washinqton To Protest Prices Washington OJ.R) The Ag riculture Department today had a hot potato protest on its door Ktep left by more than 150 angry wives of potato farmers. The farm women equipped with pillows and blankets drove up in buses Tuesday, threaten ing to camp in front of the de partment until it meets their de mands for moves to boost potato prices. The women apparently were unimpressed by a plea from de partment officials to Rive a cur rent federal potato program a chance to work. One of the wom en Mrs. Helen Grzybowski of Bridnehampton. N.Y.. said the present program is "for the birds." The potato contingent includ ed farm wives from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. They arrived with signs declaring that "Picket lines are better than bread lines." Mrs. Grzybowski said the wo men were prepared to sleep in their chartered buses in front of the Agriculture building "for as long as necessary until we get action." Assistant Secretary of Agri culture Earl Butz sought to pla cate the group at a meeting in the Department auditorium by pointing to the new potato div ersion program announced by the department last Friday. Program Worked Last Year This program is aimed at boosting potato prices by divert ing low grade spuds off the mar ket. Potato growers will be paid by the government to put in ferior spuds into starch and feed. Butz told the women that a similar program last year work ed successfully. Mrs. Grzybowski said the wo men wanted the government to buy potatoes "at going prices" and ship them to foreign coun tries "to which we have given outright loans." She said this is the fourth straight year of low prices and "we are losing our farms." Portland URi Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson was asked today to double the government subsidy payment for diverting potatoes from regular market channels to starch plants and livestock feed uses. The request came from pota to marketing agreement com mitteemen from Oregon, Idaho. Washington, California and Colo rado who met here yesterday. They recommended that the di version subsidy be increased to SI a hundredweight for the per iod ending Dec. 31, 75 cents to March 31 and 50 cents to June 30. Payment rates announced last week by Benson are 50, 40, and 30 cents respectively for those periods. The group said higher pay ments were needed to bring about prompt diversion of enough potatoes to result in ord erly marketing and increase market prices. Oder Crest Highway Will Be Reopened Salem (U.R) Gov. Elmo : Smith said today after a confer I ence with State Sen. Warren ; McMinimee of Tillamook and : state highway officials that the j scenic section of Otter Crest i road on the Oregon coast will, soon be reopened to optional ; travel. ! Several sections of the old highway that wound its way up ! to Otter Crest were closed by , the highway department a year '' ago when the new high speed , section of Highway 101 was com- pleted. I The governor explained that suitable signs will be erected I indicating that the old road is 1 an optional route. The highway i department said it will start work on the road immediately in hopes of having it ready to open early next week. Children, Young Mothers Aided by Oregon Society (Editor's Note: This other in a series' of articles concerning agencies served by contributions to the United Medford Crusade. Twenty-two Jackson county children received 3,599 day's care through the Boys and Girls Aid Society of Oregon during 1955, according to figures re leased by Stuart R. Stimmel, state director, to Sam Hersh, gen eral campaign chairman. United Medford Crusade. The Society served 981 children and unmar ried mothers last year. Stimmel pointed out that sev eral children who had suffered permanent or temporary loss of their homes were cared for in good foster homes supervised by the Society until they returned to their parents or were placed for adoption. Largest Number The 182 babies and older chil dren, placed for adoption by the Society in 1955 was the largest number ever placed by any agency in Oregon. It is a con siderable increase over the prev ious year and 452 per cent over 1945. Children were placed in 31 counties throughout the state. 'Overexuberance' Charged To Kefauver Chicago (U.R) Interior Sec retary Fred Seaton accused Sen. Estes Kefauver Tuesday of being "overexuberant" in his criticism of administration power policies. Seaton spoke briefly in Chi cago on his way through to Washington from a speaking tour throughout the West. He was asked to comment on a recent statement by Kefauver, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, that under the Eisen howr administration the public was unable to use its own power resources without v passing through a "private power toll gate." "The Senator is getting over exuberant," Seaton said. He listed examples of power projects where the government is acting as a partner. The Coosa River Project in Ala bama and Marlham Ferry Proj ect in Oklahoma were instances of the government acting in part nership with a company. Thirty -one belonged to 14 groups of broth ers and sisters placed together. Children of all races are placed by the Society and applications from couples interested in adopt ing are always welcome. Aver age wait by those receiving' chil dren in 1955 was less than eight months. ' Unmarried mothers aided by the Society numbered 292, 143 of whom were under 21 years of age. Skilled Counseling The sen-ice included medical care, living arrangements and skilled counseling. An accredit ed high school program is also available to unmarried expect ant mothers who have not com pleted their schooling, at the Society's headquarters, 2301 NW Glisan St., Portland. Southern Oregon is served by a branch office of the Society at 308 Lev erette building, Medford. The Boys and Girls Aid So ciety of Oregon is a member of Community Chests and United Funds throughout the state. Lewiston Couple Go Swimming; Frightened Lewiston, Idaho (U.R) A Lewiston couple were frightened when the swift current of the Clearwater River swept them a half mile downstream, but when they reached shallow water their troubles had only begun. They had entered the water behind their home without their bathing suits. A friendly witness to their plight waded out with blankets and called police to take them home. About 7 million new cars were sold in 1955 as compared with only about 4,000 new cars in the year 1900. Wednesday. Nixon swung into one of the roughest . days of his 16-day round the nation vote-seeking tour today confident he will soon be well. Nixon's physician, Dr. Mal colm C. Todd of Long Beach, Calif., told newsmen there are "no expectations of not going on with the schedule." Todd said Nixon was recovering satisfac torily from a virus infection and laryngitis and should be able to continue at normal speed with continued treatment. The 43-year-old vice presi dent's illness, which had him frog-voiced and wavering Mon day night in Salt Lake City, was hardly visible Tuesday night as he made an outright bid at Hous ton for Texas Democrats to bolt their party and vote for Presi dent Eisenhower again this year as thousands of them did in 1952. But Nixon, in his formal Hous ton speech, made no mention of the thorny school segregation decision which is a paramount issue across the deep South. The vice president's schedule today called for a brief early morning appearance at a GOP precinct workers' breakfast in Houston, a news conference there, and a flight to Spring field, Mo., for a mid-day speech.
