Just wanted to tell you about John Dixie of Belleville, Ont. He drank and smoked most of his life. He recently passed on as the result of an accident. He was 105 at the time of his pass ing. He was not a vegetarian. Those Pills Note it reported a well-known Hollywoodian took 125 sleeping pills at one time and subsequent ly denied she was trying to kill herself. She must have had a really bad case of insomnia. Anyway, keep in mind what I mentioned the other day. If you take some sleeping pills' don't take an alcoholic drink right after that. It could kill you. Over There In Belgium gasoline is 42 cents a gallon. In Holland it is 38 cents a gallon. In Denmark it Is 58 cents. In Finland 64. In France 68. In Germany, 70. In Italy a gallon of gasoline costs 80 cents! So now you know why scooters are" so p o p u la r in Europe. Fir Phone 2-6273 Oregon Motorists Pay $68,654,401 in Taxes Portland Oregon motorists paid an estimated $68,654,401 state and federal automotive taxes during the year 1955, ac cording to the Oregon State Mo tor association. Of the total, $32,459,000 is the amount of money paid by motorists of this state In federal use taxes, as estimated by the U.S. bureau of public roads. The amount is divided into $11,192 federal motor fuel taxes; $560,- 000 federal lubricating oil taxes: $14,625,000 aufomotive products taxes on cars and motorcycles: $2,500,000, trucks, busses and trailers: $1,637,000. parts and accessories; $1,945,000, tires and rubes. In addition to the federal taxes were $36,195,401 In state motor vehicle fuels taxes, as re ported by the Oregon depart ment of motor vehicles. For the nation as a whole. plus Alaska and Hawaii, the fed eral automotive products taxes for the year 1955 amounted to $1,746,199 000, while the federal motor fuel and lubricating oil taxes amounted to $989,437,000 or a total of $2,735,636,000. Safety Horn Blasts Irritate Minister Stockton. N.J. (U.R) The Rev. E. H. Gelvin is at odds with the Hunterdon County Freehold ers because he can't stand the sound of 100 blasts an hour from aiitn horns. The 85-year-old minister lives in a house adjoining the coverea hririfo nn the Sergeantsville road where the county instructs motorists to toot tne norns wnen an,nrintf nnH lMVintf the SD3n. Rev. Gelvin posted a sign on his property reading, Don i Blow Your Horn." The Board of Freeholders want the sign removed because they claim the hom blasts are in the interest of safety. He said 80 per cent of the honking ceas ed after he erected the sign. About 98 per cent of the world's fish catch comes from the waters which are located within the northern hemisphere Bulgaria Liberator Buried in Ohio New Lexington, Ohio (U.R) Januarious Aloysius MacGahan, proclaimed as "Liberator of Bul garia," was a Perry County resi dent who used a pen instead of arms to bring about Bulgaria's liberation. At the outbreak of the Russo- Turkish War, MacGahan was sent abroad by the New York Herald. He later joined the Lon don Daily News. His articles once caused him to be sentenced to death before a firing squad. But the U. S. Con sul obtained his release. He continued his reporting and was credited with the Russian in vasion and subsequent liberation of Bulgaria in 1877. He died of a fever in Constantinople in 188. Six years later his remains were returned to the United States through the combined ef forts of the New York Press club, the Ohio Legislature and Congress. A club was formed here in his honor and a monument erected proclaiming him "Liberator of Bulgaria." King Boris of Bulgaria sent the Bulgarian minister here on July 4, 1929, to place a wreath on the grave. As recently as 1944, the Bulgarian-Macedonian Con gress sent a delegation to the wave to honor MacGahan. (International) 50,516 Oregon Acres To Go Into Soil Bank Portland U.R) Oregon wheat farmers have agreed to put 50, 516 acres of wheat land into re serve this year under the provi sions of the government's soil bank plan. A. N. Bodtker, administrative officer for the State Agricultur al Stabilization and Conserva tion committee said that to date, 666 Oregon wheat farmers have signed up for the soil bank pro gram. Signup for the 1957 wheat crop yeas will remain open for another two weeks. . Federal Payment for Flood Valves Sought On Snake Projects Washington (U.R) Kinsey M. Robinson, president of the Pacific Northwest Power Co., said today he expects the govern ment to foot the bill if it needs flood control valves on sluice ways of two dams the company proposes to build on the Snake river. Hearings Resumed Robinson testified as the Fed eral Power Commission resumed hearings, following a five-week recess; on the company's appli cation to build the S217.4 mil lion hydroelectric project on the Idaho-Oregon border. It in cludes ' the proposed 534-foot Pleasant Valley dam and the 255-foot Mountain Sheep dam. Mrs. Evelyn N. Cooper, law yer for the National "Hells Can yon association which opposes the project, contended that Rob inson's testimony showed it was contemplated as a "partnership deal" with the government on flood control. "This is not a partnership deal," Allan A. Smith, Power company attorney, replied. He said the company agreed to build sluices at its own ex pense, but takes the position that if valves have to be in stalled the power users should not have to pay for them. Engineer Responsibility "We don't expect to pay for them," Robinson added. He said flood control was a responsibil ity of the Army engineers and that the government had paid for flood control facilities on a number of other FPC-licensed projects. However, Robinson said that if the company receives an FPC license requiring it to pay for valves "we will have to give that consideration." Robinson and Mrs. Cooper clashed several times during the hearing. .- Liner To Undergo Tests Off Oregon Portland (U.R) The Matson line's sleek new liner Mariposa undergoes sea trials off the Ore gon coast this week end prepar atory to entering service be tween California and the south seas next month. The 14.000-ton converted mar iner hull will slip from her berth at the Willamette Iron & Steel Co. yard here Friday after noon and head down the Colum bia river for two days of tests. The Mariposa will go through her paces off Astoria. The liner is the first of two being built for Matson's south sea service. After her christen ing here Oct. 16 she will sail to San Francisco and then depart on her maiden voyage Oct. 26 for Australia. She is scheduled to arrive "down under" several days before the Olympic games at Melbourne. The Mariposa's sister ship, the Monterey, goes into service in January. Airplanes Sowing Timothy Dam Seed Portland (U.R) Portland General Electric Co., reported today that airplanes are sowing grass seed in, the Timothy dam area, marking completion of the S2.200.000 projects on the upper Clackamas river. Grass seeds are being planted around the lake, the dam, and a landing strip for small planes. Several recreational facilities are being developed at the site of the man-made lake by the utility company. Timothy dam is designed to provide 85,000 acre feet of wa ter for the company's hydroelec tric dams on the river. Work on the 100-foot high dam started in October, 1954. The lake is now two-thirds filled with water, company spokesmen said. The Orkney Islands were pawned to Scotland by Norway in 1468 as security for the dowry of a Norwegian princess. Astronomer Receives Honorary Degree Berkeley, Calif. (U.R) A world-renowned astronomer who continues to teach a beginning course in his specialty has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Otto Struve, professor of astronomy at the University of California, is the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science de gree. -Dr. Stryve was cited for his research in astrophysics, especi ally in stellar evolution; his in spiration of other scientists and his contribution as president of the International Astronomical Union.
