Schools Reply to Charges Of Former UCLA Star Knox New York (U.R) Ronnie Knox' scathing indictment of football at UCLA and the Uni versity of California ' as "pro football" where he was "forced to lie and taught to connive" drew replies today from officials of the two schools. Knox, star back now playing professional football with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in . Canada, made his charges in an article in this week's Collier's Magazine. In addition to relating details of undercover payments to ath letes, he said that UCLA em ploys a "farm system" whereby athletes whose high school grades are not good enough to enter college were sent to jun ior colleges for a year and given $40 a month, "thus committing them to UCLA," and that, while at California, he had been "coached" in how to lie to Com missioner Victor O. Schmidt of the Pacific Coast Conference. Payments from Individuals Wilbur Johns, athletic director of UCLA, commented on the "farm system" charge in Los Angeles: 'I don't know how Knox can make such a statement when we have investigated the same rumors and have been un able to verify them. If any such payments are made, they must come from individuals and not from any organized group at the university." In response to Knox' written charge that UCLA "deliberately let me appear guilty of receiving under-the-table money without giving me an opportunity to prove by innocence" by refusing to turn over to the Pacific Coast Conference a list of athletes re-. : ceiving such payment, Johns maintained the school had no such list. , Books Not Opened to PCC "The penalty assessed against all our seniors, including Knox, was revoked by the conference because booster groups refused to open their books to conference investigators," said Johns. "We're sorry we could not keep athletes who might have been innocent from being punished but we could not as a university, force an outside group to open its books to the conference. At Berkeley, Calif., Athletic Di rector Greg Engelhard of the University of California, com mented on Knox' charges he was coached in how to lie to commis sioner Schmidt when the PCC head investigated football at that school in the fall of 1953: "I don't know anything about that." Regarding Knox' relation of the "deal" he received to go to California, Engelhart said, "All the strings he said have been said" before and I don't see any season to re-open the case." PARK ir. Tuesday, September 25, 1956 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THIRTEEN Exhibition Results Bears In Pro Grid By EARL WRIGHT United Press Sports Writer The National Football league has ended its exhibition cam paign and the results indicate the Chicago Bears and New York Giants will play for the 1956 championship Dec. 30 at Yankee stadium. But don't bet too heavily that it will work out that way. The NFL title has been won the past two years by the Cleveland Browns, a team that lost the bulk of its exhibitions before both those campaigns. For what it's worth, here's how the 12 clubs fared in their 1956 pre-season contests: Coach Paddy Driscoll's Bears led the Western Sivision teams with a 5-1 record. Coach Jim Lee Howell's Giants topped the Eastern Division clubs with a 4-2 mark. The Green Bay Pack ers (4-1) had the second best record among the Western Di vision teams while the Washing ton Redskins (3-3) had the sec ond best mark among Eastern clubs. The pre-season records of the other Western Division teams: Detroit Lions, 4-2; Baltimore Colts, 3-2; Los Angeles Rams, 3-3; San Francisco Forty-Niners, 3-3. Put Giants, Favored Roles The records of the other Eastern Division teams: Pittsburgh Steel ers, 2-3; Philadelphia Eagles, 2-5: Chicago Cardinals, 1-5; Cleve land Browns, 1-5.
