September 23, 1956 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THIRTEEN Buried Treasure by (faM Gun's Hunting Value Exceeds Moneys Worth We had just dined of roast peccary one of those delicious but ugly little pigs that are sure death to a man on foot and I was curious as to how Alfred, our host, had got him. "I got him and the eight oth ers in the deep freeze because I'm a good shot with the finest rifle ever made." "How did you ever get a chance to reload?" I asked. "Did you get up a tree?" "That wasn't necessary," he aid, "there were still plenty of shots in the magazine." I must have looked as if lis tening to Baron Munchausen in person, for Alfred grabbed roe by the arm. "Come on, Gace," he said, "I'll show you. You'll under stand when you see the gun." It was quite understandable, all right. The weapon he re moved from a cabinet was a Smith & Wesson Light Rifle, the first I had ever seen. "Its practically a machine INFORMATION WANTED. NOT I was sitting before the coun er examining some stamps when a fellow entered the shop and sat down beside me. "I wish to enquire about this stamp," said the newcomer, pro ducing a yellowed envelope which he laid on the counter. The proprietor stared at it for a good ten seconds and then jot up to get some catalogs. I tared, too. . The stamp was an odd one in every respect. First of all, it was eight-sided, a very unusual shape. Secondly, it was a non government carrier type with an unusual inscription reading "Metropolitan Post OfficeBible HouseNew York." There was more to the inscrip tion than that, at least there was a suggestion of more, and I im mediately began wondering where "Bible House" had been as I studied the red surface of the stamp, trying to make out the cancellation date. "I didn't succeed, however. The proprietor quickly returned carrying a volume of "Scotts Catalogue of Specialized." " "I want to know what con nection the Metropolitan Post Office could have had with Bi ble House back in 1853," the individual replied. "There must have been some connection, but I can't imagine what it was. Maybe you can tell me if any thing's been erased on the stamp here." He pointed to a certaiu cloudiness. "You're right about the eras ures," the proprietor replied. "Over 'Bible House' the erased words are '162 Ninth St. Opp,' meaning the post office was op posite Bible House. The erasure below was the name of the own er." The individual thanks him and put the envelope back in his pocket. "But don't you want to sell it?" the proprietor asked. "It's worth $400 dollars." The owner shook his head and walked out. fair. "I put the bills back in my pocket," he said, "and pulled out the silver dollars, tney clinked in my hand, and I let them fall from one hand to the other, trickling through my fin gers. "The owner of the coin was interested, fascinated, even. I could tell that right away. So presently I gave him a couple of cartwheels to examine and we began to bargain, "It didn't take long. Five min- utes, maybe, and for three ordi- nary silver dollars I got this." The coin he held out to me was a beauty. Supurb condition. Riness. 69, who suffered serious injuries in a car-truck accident on Hiway 99 is "improving nicely," accord ing to his wife. He is still con fined to the Siskiyou County General hospital in Yreka. and will continue to be for an in definite period, although he is able to be up in a wheel chair now for a short time each day. Both Mr. and Mrs. Riness are employed at the hospital, and were on their way to work the evening of Sept. 7 when their car was struck near the Bur Bel resort by a truck, and com pletely demolished. Mrs. Riness suffered two broken ribs and a severely bruis ed hip, but was not hospitalized. She expects to return to work Sept. 20. Glenn Shinar, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shinar, left last week for Chico, Calif., where he is enrolled in his second year in engineering at Chico State col lege. Another son of Mr. and Mrs. Shinar, "Skip," accompanied by Norman Cummins, spent last week-end at Reno, Nev. Enlists in Navy Eddie Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mason, left Sept. 11 for San Francisco, where he enlist ed in the Navy. A3c Frank Fick, w-ho has been stationed at Amarillo, Tex. Air Force base is spending a 30- day leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. H Chapman. He is to report in New York Oct. 7, after which he will be stationed in England for 18 months. On the return trip they visited friends in Modesto, and made short stays in Carson City and Reno, Nev., and at Lassen Na tional park. At Chester, they had the misfortune of having their car struck from the rear by a log truck, but neither of them was injuried, and the car was not extensively damaged. Leonard Bear, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bear, has enrolled at Southern Oregon college in Ashland where he is studying mechanical engineering. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Payne of Toledo, Ohio, arrived last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Chapman, where they met with their friends, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Chapman, also of Toledo. The Paynes and the Chapmans have been making a cross-coun try sight seeing trip by car, each couple going where they wish, and meeting at' a predesignated place. They have visited points of interest in Iowa, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Yellow stone National park, Idaho Washington, and Oregon, where the Paynes spent a week at the home of her brother and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mar tin at Oakland, Ore. They are now staying at Camp Lowe on the Klamath river., On Saturday, the Paynes and the E. G. Chapmans were hosts I at a smorgasboard dinner at the Tabu Dinner House in Medford ; to a group which includes be sides them, the H. H. The calm first-grader allowed the reptiles to twine around his neck and arms. And after the initial shock, the teacher. Miss Nancy Frye, encouraged young Jonathan to tell his classmates about the snakes. 'After the children saw he wasn't afraid of them, they soon were handling them like veter ans," she said. "Jonathan showed them that a lot of tales about snakes such as being slimy are just falacies." The boy is the son of a Noble Foundation scientist. Dr. Elias Cohen. Dr. Cohen said Jonathan began playing with non-poisonous snakes when he was three and now goes on field trips to hunt them. Calif., is visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Clara Howard.
