By CHARLES CORDDRY United Presi Correspondent Ottawa UJ.R The No. 2 man of the Royal Canadian Air Force i said today it probably vtill be; "well on toward the end of the ; '1360s" before intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICB.M) become a serious threat tn this continent. "There is no ICBM today," Air : Vice Marshal C .R. Dunlap. vice chief of air staff, told a group of , Cana'dian. American and British newsmen in connection with a : On The Side By E. V DURLING (Distributed bv King Feature! Syndicate. IncJ What Is the origin cf the say ing, "the life of Reilly?" That Is question long discussed by the clientele of thii department but never settled. Some claim It hat a reference to a hotel keep er named Feilly. That is an error. The hotel keeper they are thinking of was named O'Reilly, as in the song, "Are You The O'Reilly that keeps the hotel?" Others say it has to do with a man who was very friendly with certain Mrs. Heilly while her husband was off on a trip. It was said of this man that he "lived the life of Reilly while Reilly was away. Cat It Right Another question inspiring much difference of opinion among the customers it "what is the largest city in the world''" The answer to that is New York. If you won't accept my decision check with Rand, McNally. Then there is that argument about Mile. De Leon " The Girl In Blue." Was she a trapeze artist or a dancer? The original Mile. De Leon was definitely a trap eze artist who tossed garters to the customers. Jack. Norworth agrees that this Is correct. Says he played on the bill with her. Widow What Is a "Grass Widow"? On that there is quite a dif ou. ference of opinion. I say a "Grass ialis. Widow' is a married woman Sot'nose husband is temporarily lade s-bsent from home. As for ex with ample, the wife of a traveling in salesman. The term definitely does not refer to a divorcee. That Lily ; Consider the constantly used term "Gilded Lily." That is one of the most misquoted terms of all time. It should be the "Paint ed Lily." That's what Shakes peare said. Still many stubborn fellows insist "Gilded Lily" Is now correct because of constant usage. That to me is a rediculous claim. Here is what Shakespeare wrote: "To Gild Refined Gold, To Paint The Lily To Throw A Perfume On The Violet" A frequently noted error Is the quoting of that hiblical pass age as "Money Is The Root Of All Evil." It should be "The Love Of Money Is The Foot Of All Evil." That, of course, has a very defferent meaning. Greatest "Who was the greatest base ball player of all time?" On that query it appears sports fans will never agree. Some say Ty Cobb. Others Hans- Wagner. I'll take Hans. That was -John Mc Graw's opinion. What about the greatest American rare horse of the twentieth century? Was it Man O' War? Most people will say so. However, mychoice is Exterminator. Matt Winn had that opinion, too. Other Arguments What is the orgin of the say ing "O K ?" It is impossible to get a 100 per cent agreement on that. I claim it is from the Choctaw Indian word "OKEH" meaning "it is as desired." Who originated the "Monkey On a Stick" style of riding? The great majority claims it was Tod Sloan. I believe it was the great negro Jockey, Willie Simms. Please Note On what date of the year was George M Cohan horn Most people will say July 3. 1878. Here's anotherquestion that is endlessly disputed: "Who was the original 'It Girl' of the films?" The general belief is that is was Clara Bow. That is erroneous. It was Aileen Princle. Another query causing much discussion is "What is a Turkhen?" Most people say it is a bird that is a cross between a Khode Island red hen and a turkey. Others say that is wrong. That the Turkhen Is a bird originally bred In Persia. I am not sure about the answer to that myself. What do you say? PICTURE TUBES REJUVENATED i rour picture tube dud anj week? The electronic "burglar alarm" which Canada is building 400 miles north of the United States and the S400 million Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line at the top of the continent, which Amer ica is building, have come in for criticism here by some retired Army officers, publications and othT sources. The argument is made that the warning lines will be obsolete like the French Maginot Line in World War II and that they tie Canadian strategy too closely to America's. There also has been some U.S. criticisms, but milder than here. Dunlap. an authority on air de fense, asserted that warning lines in the North can reduce the pos sibility of surprise attack to the point that there may be "little likelihood" of attack at all on this continent. If an enemy could "drive Into a continent and destroy its means of retaliation," he said, the pros ! pect would be "tempting." There j fore, it is "absolutely impera- tive" to have at least the means lor limited warning. Warning lines certainly will not be obsolete as long as bomb ers are used, Dunlap said. He said the Russians are just in the "early stages" of introducing long-range jet bombers to replace their piston-engine copies of the World War II B-29. It will take "several years" to build the Fussian Bison bomber force, he said, and these bombers probably won't be in operational use until the "late 1960s." The ICBM is still a " big ques tion mark," Dunlap went on, but responsible opinion holds that it will take until the late 1960s to develop the city-wrecking rocket into an accurate weapon. He said the ICBM. which he described as a 6.000-mile cannon, probably will be employed for a time side-by-slde with bombers, rather than replacing the man ned aircraft. Could Be 'Modernised' While Dunlap did not touch on the point, the RCAF told news men in prepared material given them on the tour that the north ern warning lines can be "mod ernized" in the future to become defense lines against ballistic missiles. "Any defense against the ICBM will require forward de fense lines so that these installa tions will not be wasted," the RCAF said. "They will merely require to be modernized." Some criticism of the northern defense construction projects has been linked with concern that Canada's sovereignty may be im paired by the presence of num bers of Americans on Canada's far northern soil. There was pub lished criticism last spring, after a Dew Line press tour, that the American flag was flying at an RCAF station being used to sup port the Dew Line project. An editorial in a Prairie prov ince newspaper said the other i That may be all right in "strictly I government to watch the matter day that airmen "are nowadays defense" matters, the paper said, of "sovereignty and civilian gov essentially a denationalized but it is the job of the Canadian ernment in the North." crew. They may be Canadian or they may be American but their decisions are ruled more from Washington than from Ottawa." fir Happy Hotpoint Says: HOTPOINT In a period of 51 years has provided for the public over 15,000,000 major Electric Appli ances.
