IS VIS That Fall Is Near j By UNITED PRESS ! A cold blast of Arctic air cov ering Ihe Great Lakes and a IjsM snowfall in Northern Mich Utn were advance warnings to day that autumn was almost here. Weathermen said fall would officially arrive Saturday at 5:3b p.m. fPSTj. A trace of snow fell at Hough ton, Mich., where temperatures dropped into the 30s as cold air moved southward across the Great Lakes region. The season's first snow flurries also were re ported at Wausau, Wis., and Tra verse City. Mich. ExUnd Into Texas The sharp blast of cold air extended from the Lower Great Lakes area southward through 1h Northern Ohio Valley and into the northern portions of the Lower Mississippi valley and Texas. Movement of the cold air today was to be southeastward In the region of the Arctic air, early morning temperatures ranged from 10 to 25 degrees lower than Wednesday, and had dropped into the upper 20s in some sections of the Upper j Great Lakes. At Chicago Wednesday, the mercury strained to reach 51 degrees, the lowest reading for a Sept. 19 since 1938. Showers Expected Scattered showers were ex pected from the Appalachians eastward to the Atlantic Coast with the further movement of the chilly air. A few snow flur ries were forecast for tonight in the higher elevations of North ern New England. Meanwhile, fair weather was to prevail west of the Appalach ians to the Rockies, with a slight warming over the Northern Plains. Fair skies were predicted for the Southern Rockies west- : ward to the Pacific while scat tered showers wet the Pacific ; Northwest. ! j Crossbow Used ! In Mystery Assault East Los "Angeles U.R) The crossbow, a weapon out of the past, was used Wednesday night by a mysterious assailant who wounded liquor store clerk Wil liam . Allen, 20. A 16-inch arrow with a 2z Inch wide tip was fired through the back entrance of the store and struck Allen below his right shoulder blade, puncturing a lung. The victim, found lying on the floor, was taken to Holly wood hospital where he was given a blood transfusion. Sheriff's officers found the crossbow, cocked and loaded, be hind a hedge in the neighbor hood. A box containing four feathered, sieel-tipped arrows was found with the weapon. j The crossbow was described by an officer as a steel bow on a wooden stock, a type preferred by archery hunters. The basic weapon was used primarily in medieval times. Two Men Rescued From Rafl in Ocean Newport. Ore. U.R Two men who had to abandon their tuna boat when it sank were rescued from their life raft today by the fishing vessel Santiam. The Santiam radioed the Coast Guard at 7:26 a.m. that it had picked up the two men and was proceeding to Newport. No names were reported. The two fishermen aboard the 45-foot vessel Al Jr. radioed at 3 a.m. their vessel was sinking and they were abandoning ship. The Al Jr. at that time was about 60 miles west by north west of this coastal town. It was not known what caused the tuna boat to sink. Churchill's Son Ends Career as 'Quiz Kid' New York 0J.P.) Randolph Churchill, soldier and journalist, today saw finis written to his at tempt to become a quiz kid. The son of the former British prime minister flunked his sec ond question on "The S64.000 Question" television quiz pro gram Tuesday night and the pro ducers of the show announced he would not return next week. Churchill, shaking his head sadly, agreed he did not de serve a return bout. "I had no business trying to become a quiz kid at 45." he said. SAFE FOR THIEVES Paterson. N.J.
